Title: Mt. Hull
Post by: BKMFR on April 01, 2015, 10:53:57 PM
I'm hearing Mt. Hull might only have one tag on it this year, does anyone know for sure? and what about the auction tag that was bought before the rules were set, is he out of luck for hunting Mt. Hull??

Mt Hull was not one of the units listed when the tag was sold in Reno. I've heard one permit there too.

How many rams were taken out of the Hull herd last year, legally by hunters....6 or 7?  Whichever number, I personally feel that was a few too many.  Maybe need to restructure a few words on the hunts there. :twocents:

I personally know of 5 rams taken, and there was, and still is, two there that are bigger than the last one taken by auction tag holder..... I agree that there was to many taken in one year, but wish they would start opening more ewe tags..... or transplant in areas where anyone can hunt them....

I would agree.  Also, lets transplant some genes out and bring some new genes into this herd to keep it going strong.

!00% agree that's what we did in the 80's to turn this herd around, we used think a mid 160's was a good ram-and it was for the mountain at that time..... plus we put out many Selenium blocks.... but new blood was the key!!

Yes, I would believe he would be out of luck if they only issue one permit for the Mt. Hull unit. That would be my guess anyways.

I helped a friend with his Mt Hull Ram in 2014 (See my profile pic).  We also helped the young guy fill his tag on the opener.  Nice ram, went 171" ( 33" and 15+ inch bases and carried the mass well). We saw many Rams in the 160's and one giant ram we thought would go close to 180".  Unfortunately, when we saw it, my buddy was helping the other draw tag holder.  Searched for weeks and couldn't turn up the big ram.  My buddy shot a great ram three weeks later that also went 171" (35 & 37"  with 14" bases).  We were told Rams in this unit had more mass. Mass of course is the toughest to judge. His bases were only 14 1/8.

Casey Brooks shot a big ram the following weekend.  It is now the World Record Archery Cali.  I am told it scored right around 180".  I'm not sure if it's the same ram we saw, but it looks the same.

Numbers:  We counted 126 different rams on our best day. I was there two weeks ago and sheep are scarce. We saw 20 rams, the best being a 160".  WDFW said there are only 175 total sheep in the unit.  That may be true when they fly the winter range, but during early October there are a lot more sheep in this unit. Allowing 2 raffle tags, a governor tag, two draw tags an two tribal tags is too many if you are managing for quality.  1 tag is not enough.  You could take 3 or 4 mature rams out of that herd every year and still have happy tagholders year after year.  There are several sheep units where 160" rams are hard to come by.  This is not one of them.

Good luck to all in the draw!

I was up at a little lake fishing on top of the mountain with 2 of my friends last year. We had a grizzly walk 70 yards from us. Maybe he's eating to many lambs? :dunno:

More bad news for the Hull herd. The tribe just awarded 4 ram tags along with 2 ewe tags. I'm assuming they exercised their right to havr as many rams tags as wdfw hands out, and last year with all the other raffle/gov extra rams killed on Hull upped the tribes number from 2 to 4. Hoping the best for this herd since other local herds are really struggling.
