Bobcat and I went out coyote calling and started 2009 off right.
We went to an area that Bobcat had scouted, but never hunted. When we got there we quickly noticed that it had recently been logged nearby. I wanted to take a look “over the hill” and found a downhill slope that was logged with reprod along the right side.
The wind was light from our left to our right and Bobcat set up downhill about 50 yards from me. He had the Foxpro about 25 yards away on his right side. I couldn’t see Bobcat, but wanted him closer to the call since he was shooting his shotgun. I hunkered down behind a fallen log and didn’t really have a great field of view.
I ran a hi-pitched cottontail sound for almost a minute, but didn’t like it and I switched to DSG. After about another minute I tried to reposition a bit so I could see Bobcat. What I saw was the shotgun come up and go BOOM! I quickly looked to the left and saw the coyote just as the shotgun went off again. BOOM! Spinning yote, right in the mud puddle. The dog came to 25 yards when Bobcat raised to shoot and it died only a few yards away.

It was a small male with a kind of ratty hide. I drug it out of the puddle and Bobcat went for the camera. It was the only dog of the day though we did end up on a couple fresh sets of tracks. Some guy and his dogs walked in right behind us and blew that set. But it was a great day other than that.

Not all from poor shape. He was healthy looking. He had short thick fur along his sides and rear with some long guard hair across his back. Most of it was water/mud, but he still wasn't worth skinning.

i am going out in the morning .hope i get some picks.good job fellas.

I should mention, I used a 12 gauge load of 1 1/4 ounce of BB's and the first shot was around 35 yards, second shot maybe 5 to 10 yards farther out. I should have been able to kill him at 25 yards as he was facing me but I just wasn't quick enough in getting the gun up. When I began raising the gun he started moving off, and luckily he didn't seem to be in too big of hurry, but nevertheless I didn't feel like giving him much time to put a lot of distance between me and him. :chuckle: That's the nice thing about the shotgun, it was quick, but it was also good knowing I had BTKR to back me up with his 243.

Congrats, That is one ugly dog :chuckle:

Rick, how much are those "Dead Coyote" shells? I was thinking about picking some up, although the 2 3/4 inch BB's that I bought 20 years ago seemed to do ok.

I was gonna get some Hevi- Shot Dead Coyote shells, but I couldn't justify the price. . .$30/10 shells. . .I ended up buying som #4 buckshot instead at $5/5 shells. . .I can get 3 times as many shells for the same price. . .and what difference are 15 "bb's" gonna make really. . .although the 70+ yards thing on Hev-Shots website sure caught my eye. . .I wonder if my #4 buck can go to 70 yards effectively???
I haven't had a chance to find out yet because I haven't seen a coyote to shoot at since the snow fell on the ground out here on the West side of the state!!!!
-
i have over 8 box's only had to pay for a couple. when i shoot something with the deaed coyote you know when it hit's. i have a bunch of buck shot to. most guy's at predatormaster's use buckshot. TRoick
-
Well, I'll probably pick up some #4 buckshot whenever I get a chance. Or, a box of 3 inch magnum BB's, if there is any of that to be found. But I've still got 22 of the 2 3/4 inch BB's, 1 1/4 ounce. I'll have to get rid of them first, or maybe I should just save them for bobcats. Bought a box of 25 in 1989 for $10.79. :o

It is being served at the Meet. I think it will be disguised as chili. :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle:

There's no way I could hold onto shells that long!!!
-
Well I bought them for coyote hunting but then never really hunted much for them, and when I did I always used a rifle.
I think I might have to shoot some of them up on crows. :chuckle:
