I have been trying to get a coyote for a while now. Went out this morning to a gated area, hiked in about a mile and went to set up only to realized I had forgotten my phone. I use my phone as my Mp3 player for my home made e-caller. I did one stand with hand calls with no luck. I had planned on being out all day and put together a bunch of free Mp3 sounds to try and get a bobcat and or coyote. So I decided to make the hike out, drive home, get the phone and then get back to it. I got back up in the woods around 11am. The amount of coyote tracks in the snow was insane! I think I found the coyote super-highway. :chuckle:
I set up at the end of an old logging road that is almost completely over grown and borders a stand of timber on one side. There is two two large cedar trees on the other side of the little turn out area and they kind of make a cave under them. The whole clearing is about 20 yards across, not much but around where I live that is all you get. I set up the speaker in the middle of the opening and sat in the little cave. I can only see about 30 yards and most of that is through really thick brush. I turn on the call and let it run with my best attempt at an irresistible bobcat sequence. Well this coyote must think it is a bobcat cause she decided to come in at about the 10 minute mark :P. When I first see her she is only about 15 yards from me directly across the road. As soon as she moved behind some of the brush I brought my shotgun up and when she step into the next opening I pulled the trigger. 00 buck knocks them right down at 20 yards. I am using 00 buck because I have a cougar tag and I hunt in a firearm restricted area, I dont want to have a lighter load in the chamber and have a cougar come in. I was very excited to get my first coyote and wanted to keep the hide but she had mange pretty bad. She also had a HUGE belly! She must have been eating really well, she looked like she was pregnant.

Forgot to ask. . .where are you hunting at???
Sounds like very similar situations to what I'm hunting. . .right down to using a shotgun with buck (#4 for me. . .I don't have a cougar tag though). . .in fact looks like an 870 to me. . .that's what I've got. . .still wish I had a rifle to pair up with though!!!

Yep 870 super mag. The area is out past Hockinson, WA in the Battleground unit. I think Im going to stick to timber from now on. It is really tight quarters but it seems to work. I havnt had any luck getting the dogs to break from their cover so I will just go in after them. Oh yeah I forgot to mention I covered the speaker with Fox urine. That is probably why the fat coyote came in so hard, I know she wasnt hungry. I wish the picture showed how really big and hard her belly was.

I haven't had any luck in the timber yet. . .but I think that I'm having the same problem as you. . .can't get them to break cover. . .so I'm gonna have to go in after them to. . .I just don't want to scare them off in the process!!!

Congratulations! Having just recently shot my first coyote, I can totally relate. I am going after #2 Sunday AM.
I just bought a cat toy (recommended on one of the forums, but I haven't relocated the message to properly give credit to the person suggesting it) called SmartyKat Loco!Motion. It cost $15 at Walmart. I hung a coyote tail from the swinging wire, and it looks like the cats meow, if you know what I mean. I had to order it through Walmart online.

this might be a dumb question but what do you do with a yotee. can you eat them or just mount them or make a skin?
-
nice job on the yote and nice looking gun
-
take it to your local butcher and they can make a mean summer sausage out of it, but you will only have about 2.5lbs, lol haha :chuckle:
:cue:
-
I prefer to roast them whole and give it to the inlaws :chuckle:
-
HONESTLY- if that yotie had mange i would get a shovel and dig about 2ft, put the yotie in it and cover with remaining dirt... otherwise since your using a shotty, they would make great furrs/mounts, DO NOT TRY AND COOK THEM!
