Title: Ace Line Hauler Gimbal Mount
Post by: RB on April 26, 2015, 09:36:16 PM
Hey has anyone mounted an Ace Line Hauler in a Gimbal mount?? Was thinking of getting a gimbal downrigger mount and putting my hauler on it. Anybody??

I've just mounted mine to my Scotty, fixed base.  I did add a piece of angle aluminum to put a second pin in to keep it from rocking back and forth though.

Anyone thinking of getting an ACE, I highly recommend them as their warranty service has been top notch.  I was not even the original purchaser of a new unit and they have taken care of me when needed.

The problem is the fixed plate (for Scotty Downrigger) is too far in my Ace won't even stick over the edge. Rather than add more holes to the boat, and move the plate, I was looking at the gimbal mount because it is a more optimal spot. Just not sure how sturdy the gimbal mount is, it is on a 21ft Seaswirl stainless at the top with four screws and a plastic sleeve that is pinned. I would imagine that most of the torque is going to be on the stainless ring at the top and it looks fairly solid.

Yes I agree about the Ace love mine!

Be sure to stress test it for sideways pull as well as straight down.  I had mine pull out of the rail when I snagged the bottom in a strong current/wind situation (guess I should have used bolts instead of screws to start with      :chuckle:  ).  There is definitely  a lot of torque on that base.

Yes thank you will do that is why I ask looking for the experience that others have had. Would hate to sink the puller in the drink they are too expensive to lose and I hate hand pulling shrimp pots!

I had to grab mine by the power cord as it went under.   :yike:

I pulled by hand all of last season.  It's not so bad when you at least have the wheel on the puller arm to use so you can pull back instead of up over the rail.

Do you have a pic of the gimbal mount?  Good luck this weekend.

My buddy uses his Ace with a gimbal mount.  He has zero issues using the gimbal mount.

No picture was looking online at the universal mount made by Scotty to slide into the gimbal going to go look at them in person tomorrow and pick one up and get it rigged for Saturday! Thanks for the feed back  and good luck to you as well  :)

OK, I looked online at those.  I would tie my ACE to the boat as  well, those things look like they just stick in there by gravity.

There is a pin inside the Gimbal to hold it in I will be making sure it cannot just pull out  ;)

I bought a Scotty puller. One thing I've noticed is that the Cannon gimbal mounts are much beefier than the Scotty ones that have the flimsy pipe. The previous owner of my boat mounted a Scotty plate to a Cannon gimbal insert.

I've tried a gas puller in a gimbal mount. Don't do that... heh

I'll be putting in at Armeni at 0530. See you out there.
