Title: PC for lightroom and photoshop
Post by: romaknows on April 30, 2015, 07:09:46 PM: Hey, my wife is getting into photography and needs a computer for editing, mostly in lightroom, we would like to keep it under a $1000.00, any advice/ recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just got a dell micro quadcore 5 with 8 gig ram. $500 - the size of a small box of granola bars. crazy.

Post by: Bean Counter on May 03, 2015, 03:10:16 PM: I use a MacBook Pro. I generally DO NOT recommend Apple products. I have been dissatisfied with my experience. If you watch a lot of YouTube masterclasses, you'll see Macs a lot. But they aren't necessary. Kind of a snoody, in-the-club sort of thing. They're overpriced and actually have a lot of cheaper components for the price you pay. They're generally pretty user friendly, come without bloatware, and have a nice cosmetic, exterior finish. Its nice being able to go into an Apple store and get an obligation free diagnosis. What's sad is the number of times I've had to go in, given the price I paid :( If you're competent enough to instal antivirus software and uninstall bloatware your money goes much further with PC. Actual use of Adobe products in Mac vs PC doesn't matter much, esp now that most PCs do 64bit processing.

If you aren't overly mobile, definitely get a tower instead of a laptop. Towers give you much more power, memory, and storage than a laptop dollar for dollar, and are also better at cooling/ventillation than a laptop--which is a big part of the problem I've had with my Crapple Macintrash laptop. Lightroom generates a TON of heat, and that causes wear on components, especially the lead free paste that connects the graphics card to the motherboard ("logic board" in Mac talk). All that said, I edit my photos both at home and away and so being mobile is incredibly handy.

What does "getting into" photography mean? I have been doing photos seriously for a few years, and this spring am finally making some money as a second shooter at weddings, and have been served just fine by Lightroom. Photoshop is a bit too complex for my stupid head. Perhaps you're considering a subscription to the Creative Cloud? If so, please let us know how you like it after a few months. I'll get around to upgrading to Lightroom 6 when its on sale, and I prefer to purchase rather than rent. :twocents:

Having said that I use a 17 in. Dell Inspiron Laptop, and it does fine.
