Title: Help me judge this bear...
Post by: rtspring on May 14, 2015, 07:24:05 AM
I have some private property (126) acres with a ton of bears.  I shot a bear in 2012 and could not stand the taste.  So I wont shoot another for the meat, I will give it to someone...

This guy looks like a good bear for a mount, or rug..

How big is he?
Boar or sow?

I wanna have a nice rug or mount then Im done shooting bears..

Looks rather full of himself, all strutting around like he owns the place.  He probably does that thing in the woods, too.

Sorry, only pic I have. Just snapped a pic of my computer screen when I checked the trail cams..  I was thinking 170 or so.  There is a huge choclate sow in the same area, she has two cubs..  Might wait on her this fall if the cubs are big enough, or gone..

I've decided that the best way to eat bear is pepperoni and summer sausage.  I figure I usually have some venison and elk or other things that are good as burger and I don't need to eat bear that way.

Girlfriend loves it too.  The main reason she wants me to get one (she likes animals and doesn't want me killing any) is for the summer sausage.  I'm kind of a picky meat guy, but Del Fox does a good job.  In the future I'm going to bring them sacks of meat to avoid the "cut it off the bone" charge, a flat rate which I think is in the neighborhood of $80.  To just have them process pepperoni and summer sausage for you I believe its just a per pound charge.   :twocents:

I categorize bears in 50 lb increments, because I can't tell any better than that, but this one is in my 150 lb category.

He has a rather good noggin on him.  Take another look at him in late September and decide.

Just remember that the bigger the bear the more it will cost at the taxidermist. and do you have room somewhere in your house for a really big one? I have a small one on my wall that takes up a lot of space, if he was any larger he wouldn't fit there. he has a great hide and still looks awsome, just not huge.... Just food for thought

RT,
IGNORE THIS!  I hope you have all kinds of trouble trying to figure out how to pay for such a rug and that he won't fit on any of your walls  :chuckle:

I agree. Between my dad and I we have shot 6 bears in the past 10 years. Pepperoni sticks and summer sausage is all we have made out be a anymore. It is very good and nice snacks.

But in regards to the original post, that be a looks around 150-175. About 5 ft. I would say. Looks male. Females has skinny faces is the best way I can tell.

Well it appears I have learned much from you guys , I looked at this picture before reading on made my call and I was right on the money ! Seems all this drinking and gonja has really sharpened my tool box. I have everything needed to make my own bear rug and have studied it completely a few times, doesn't seem that tough of a deal. I talked on the phone with a guy in Virginia named Binko , he tells me he is indian sorts and has done several ,says I can call him anytime when im ready so this is a task I will be takeing on . I have afifty pound bag of cure salt at the cabin so im ready for step 2,as for the meat I have absolutely no clues, I don't care for it so the day after it will be up for grabs,,,,,,,well that's if you can stand to meet a accussed gonja alchoholic freek !!      ( wich I am neither ) but others think differently I geuss,, ( just a wiiild and kerrrraaazey guy ) :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
