Title: The coyote curse
Post by: deerhunter_98520 on May 31, 2015, 06:10:51 PM
I've never made an effort to hunt coyotes till this year....I got a fox pro for Xmas and decided its just another reason to spend time in the woods taking out some fawn killers... Well that was my idea  :chuckle: I don't know what it is about yotes but ive shot at a few out deer hunting and missed and now twice when I went calling for them I've missed 3 of them  :bash: last weekend I went out without a gun because I didn't get my license in the mail yet and turned the fox pro on to get the attention of some does hoping they would run in and show themselves to my 5 yr old and this guys decides to come into 100yds and stand there and howl at me  :bash:
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi799.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fyy275%2Fdeerhunter_98520%2FIMG_20150524_145130_710_zpsshk70xux.jpg&hash=dd8355fbaa1b426658f9900af77445947743ab52) (http://s799.photobucket.com/user/deerhunter_98520/media/IMG_20150524_145130_710_zpsshk70xux.jpg.html)

Then a half hour later I check out another spot and find this one bedded 50yds from 2 deer
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi799.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fyy275%2Fdeerhunter_98520%2FIMG_20150524_172613_949_zpsum4dfoq6.jpg&hash=2e99a89fd51695be82f6fbef3fbe4020cf00e822) (http://s799.photobucket.com/user/deerhunter_98520/media/IMG_20150524_172613_949_zpsum4dfoq6.jpg.html)

So I decided to head back there today with rifle in hand and my fox pro again....after my first series of calls I glass over the cut again and there's a yote sitting there looking in my direction at what I think is 300 yds....I settle in and let one loose and dust flies up in front of it....I forgot my rangefinder but guess it to be 350 yds and looking at it again  :bash:

I tried another calling session and seen one more doing mach 1 across the cut towards their den where the 4 others were sounding off but no shot....I end up leaving and trying the other spot where we seen the bedded coyote last weekend.
I get setup and start the rabbit distress call and let it go for 10 min and I'm glassing the whole time....and after the 4th time glassing the timberline I spot a coyote at 350yds bedded on top of a big old ceder stump...I sneak down and get setup and aim for 350 yds while my sister watches and I sent another down range....clean miss I shot over his back  :bash: :bash: :bash: 2 misses in one day....I guess next time I won't forget my rangefinder  :bash: :bash: after looking again I think it was closer to 275...should have held dead on  :bash: I'll be back at it next weekend trying to break the coyote curse and bag my first yote ....to be continued......with as he lays pics  :chuckle:

At least you got a couple pictures, those are pretty cool. But hopefully you can kill a few of those. Sounds like there's way too many, and they're eating your deer!

Yep. They are following the does so they can eat the fawns.

theres a ton of coyotes there along with a ton of deer....we got to listen to them take a deer down opening weekend last year....i know the general vacinity of the den...within a few hundred yards atleast....ive had as many as 6-7 coyotes sound off at once.....i wont be giving up....im determined to get them out of there.....i have 2 other spots that ive been seeing them regularly also...they have been just bedding by the does waiting for those fawns to drop...ill be back out saturday to try it again

I live in Olympia.  I love coyote hunting and have all gear calls, decoys, scents, concealment blinds, camo.  Let me know if you want to get together and light up some coyotes.  It is a great excuse to get out scout.  I believe you become a better overall hunter going after coyotes.  (and you can do it all year and at night in the off season of big game)

Damn coyotes are thick by our house, they keep trying to lure our dog and the neighbors dog out in the woods to "play".  They are both labs and are decent size so I hope if they stick together they will be fine.  I really would like to kill the coyotes but they are on private property.

Don't feel bad, weve all missed our share. just learn from your mistakes and try to get them in closer. get them running towards your call and not downwind from ya either

And the curse still lives...went back out to the same spot again....had 4 coyotes going off around me in 4 directions and one snuck in behind me and sat there at 20' until I turned around to look and it ran off  :bash: his time will come!  :bfg:

Thanks for sharing the coyote stories, you are not alone, they are crafty and not as big as they look.

Here's a quick tip for ranging shots. When you get to your "shooting spot" wait 5 minutes or more before calling to let the place calm down. During this time draw a crude map of the area and shooting lanes. Fill in landmarks like stumps, edges of clear cuts, fallen trees etc. Then use your range finder and mark distances to these items.

It makes shooting much faster when the target isn't waiting around. Estimating distance is also much more accurate when you know the distance to nearby objects.

Having to put the crosshairs on your game twice is always slower especially when your rangefinder is taking its time to read the distance.

Don't just rely on a fox pro use hand calls too.. been calling quite a few bear calling fawn distress. A howl and pup distress would be killer used it a couple weeks ago. Rick

I rarely go out to target yotes, but when I do I bring my rifle, and a 12 gauge with a turkey choke for those suckers that show up close quarters. Man I wish I had a fox pro I'd love to do some fur collecting

I'll be down for 3 weeks starting the first week of June, Tom. Let me know if you'd like a coyote hunting/scouting pard. Got my permit already.
