Title: Ocean Shores fishing in July?
Post by: LipRipper! on June 12, 2015, 08:39:32 AM
I'm headed to Ocean Shores around the weekend of July 25-26 for a wedding.  I've never been over there before, I'm from the east side of the state.  I was wondering what type of fishing I could do while I was over there, if any.  Any suggestions?  Possibly surf pearch? What type of gear do I need?  I have plenty of heavy duty rods, but I have no idea of the tackle or bait I should use.  I'll be from shore, I don't have the dough for a charter, but any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Even if it's not worth my time to bring my pole, I'd love to know.  Thanks.

LET'S GO RIP SOME LIPS!

LipRipper,

Surf Perch fishing can be had from most of the Washington beaches and you will have access to them right there in Ocean Shores. The key to surf perch fishing is location, that is, pick a spot that looks good to you. Cast out far, medium, and short. Don't be surprised if you pick one up 30 ft from where you are standing in the surf. which reminds me, bring waders! If you don't have a bite within a reasonable amount of time move your location 25 yards up or down the beach until you locate the fish.  For gear, i personally use an 11ft Lamiglas surf king. Its a great rod but do bring a heavy spinning rod as you will be casting a 3 ounce pyramid weight into the surf. The longer the rod the better. I usually spool up with either 17 or 20 lb test to tackle the beating that occurs when hucking the weight into the surf. for hooks, i generally use the size 1 eagle claw pre tied hooks. They work great for the application. Heres a link to my surf perch video.
I hope this helps you out.

Thanks for all of the replies and messages.  I got a lot of great advice and I think I'll be ready to go when the time comes.  I think I'll be setup for gear, just have to pick up some bait over there.
I live here and would be glad to get out with you if I'm around that weekend.
I'll let you know of the days we'd be fishing TomT and I'd be happy to have you join me and give me a few pointers.

Thanks again everyone.

I do more salmon/steelhead fishing, but I've been out for surf perch a few times and have always caught some fish.   Hey H20, you should really stay for the 4th.  The fireworks here are like nothing you've ever seen!  I'll have family visiting around the time you'll be here, but shoot me a message before you come and if I can get away, I will.

I have never done any surf fishing but I am interested in learning.  So I am in, you just need to tell me what I need to bring.

The Fireworks is off the charts?  Do people bring their own or is there just people every where setting them off.

The rez is right there.  The town is packed, people drive in from all over.  There are fireworks going off up and down the beach as far as you can see.  Yeah pretty cool.

What Skeeter said!  Probably 6 miles worth of thousands of people setting off millions of dollars of fireworks.  The Quinault's show is good, but is overshadowed by hours worth of private fireworks.

Staying for the 4th was considered and I'm sure it is nothing short of epic. However, plans have been laid and we are expected back.

Got out today for a few hours just to make sure I could catch some surf perch.  Only got four, but they were pretty big.

Look for smooth spots in the waves coming in you will see calm pockets of water. Cast shrimp clams or worms in the pocket.
