Going to head into the unit this weekend to do some scouting and get some starting points for our hunt. I have not spent time in the unit but believe me we will be in there all summer. My buddies and I have plenty of backpack hunting experience and are planning on spending most of our time in the high country of the unit. That being said I am curious if anyone could give me some pointers or starting points, like trailheads or good roads to drop off of to begin are scouting. We don't care how steep it is and will put the work in for this tag, 2 of us have the whole season off the other buddy only has 1 week.
Any info would be greatly appreciated
thanks and good luck to all!!!

Google earth is your friend. Combine that with a Delorme map and you should be good.

I also drew archery, Handcock permit worth buying? Cant scout it because of fire danger? Or should i focus on hunting higher towards crystal mt. New to this area.. Any helpp??
-
Good luck brother! My
Buddy drew the tag and we are up scouting as much as we can. Maybe we will cross paths!

Laqua338, Don't buy the pass yet , Hancock White River may not open the entire season and even if it did open I'm not sure you would want it . The tribe has hit it pretty hard the pass couple years and there are other areas in the White River to hunt .
Good luck to all that have this tag , would like to be there myself , maybe next year .

It all started when my 2 hunting partners and i found out we drew White River archery tags. We knew are work was cut out for us being that we had never stepped foot in this unit. We spent 7 weekend scouting trips, all but 1 trip was an all weekend backpack trip. We saw and video'd a lot of good bulls and also got plenty of trail cam pics. We started are hunt by hiking in the day before the opener and being way back in for opening day. Went to our planned spot for opening morning and got on elk right away. I was first shooter and as we crept on some cows that we could here my buddy Mike moved to my right and ended up making the right move. He could see a 5x5 that I could not so he drew back and stepped up a little farther exposing a big 6x5 which he smoked at 40yds. The bull went less than a 100yds and was piled up, we spent the rest of that day getting that bull out. It was a great start but the next 8 days elk were hard to come by and not much for bugling. My other buddy Adam had to leave the second Sunday as his vacation was over. The next day on Monday I almost got a shot a 5x5 but one of his cows busted me as I was drawing back and they all ran off. We spotted the bull I ended up shooting on Tuesday night and went in after him on Wednesday morning. They had moved down closer and we busted them earlier than we thought we would run into them. This bull along with a smaller one and some cows moved into the timber. I moved to where they went in and cow called getting a response right away. My buddy Mike bugled below which got the bull pissed off and he came into 16yds. I smoked him and he went less than 100yds. 2 really good Bulls and 2 arrows, one heck of a season and so much fun.
Hope you guys enjoy, I know we did. Good luck to everyone else
Thanks Chris

So the quality is terrible, only place i could find a picture was on an old phone, lost the original when my computer crashed. Anyway, here's what I thought was the same bull from a year or two prior, not sure but very similar genetics anyway....
