So my buddy from the NE corner inadvertently put his son in for the quality rifle deer tag in the Lincoln unit. He is sick about because he feel like he wasted his son's points as they don't have the time or money to drive over and scout the area out. He called me to see what I know about the area, but I've honestly never hunted there. He is not a member of this site, so I figured I would reach out to see if anyone has any information on the unit. Does anyone have any ideas on where they should start so they don't just waste the tag?

Much of it requires the Pe Ell North access permit from Weyerhaeuser, which is sold out. But there are a couple large blocks of state land that they can access. I'd definitely plan on hunting the first week of the season before modern firearm elk season starts. The rut will be going good at that time, and there won't be many people in the woods. He will definitely want to shoot any buck that's 3 point or better. Maybe even a 2 point if he hasn't killed many deer. I'm not sure that permit should really be in the Quality category.

Unfortunately Weyerhaeuser's Pe Ell north permits are sold out, that is the best portion of the unit in my opinion. There are pockets of state land though. You might have him look at accessing the state land via Teague Rd or Deep Creek Rd. There is also a good chunk of state land that splits some of the Pe Ell north Weyerhaeuser permit area that can be accessed from the south from Chandler road near Doty, or off Lincoln Creek Rd on the north end.
Should be a fun hunt though, it will probably be the kid's best chance at a nice blacktail in his life if he plans to stay in the NE corner.

Lords options, I'd scour the ridge between Lincoln creek and independence valley. Should b e some walk in. Also check out lapisto rd, state ground up there as well.

One thing you might tell the kid, to get his excitement level up, is the #1 blacktail did come out of that unit, I think in 1953. So the genetics are there, just maybe not the same habitat they had back then, Plus that unit gets a ton of hunting pressure, I guess because it's close to I-5.
(I'm not sure if that buck is still #1, but it's not too far down the list if it's been beat)

This for sure. there are some slam dunk walk in areas between independence and Lincoln creek almost all port Blakely. Lapisto is a good area also I scored my first 4 point up there when they first punched the new road in to the plane crash.

I am surprised they call it a "quality" tag also..
But there are plenty of deer, access is the main issue.
We get a few good looking bucks wandering through the neighborhoods here though...
What is the time (dates) of the permit?
-
It's Nov 1-18

I think it has all the makings of a "quality" tag, but I've killed several good bucks out there over the years, and seen lots more killed by other folks.. If he only has 1 week to hunt, I'd hunt the first week. I also wouldn't sweat not having the weyco permit.

Thanks for the info guys, I will pass it onto buddy and his son. I know his kid has shot a pretty an average muley and a couple of decent whitetails, but has never hunted blacktails. This may turn out to be a great hunt for them together.

I live in the unit. And would be happy to show him around, and show him some holes, if he is interested drop me a pm. Tere's alot of deer, but navigating around private land can be frustrating. IMO this is a good tag and with those dates and if he is in the right areas he will see bucks daily. And should be able to tag a nice representative of the species.

I'd hunt it from the 7th through 18th. That's modern elk season also and it's 3pt min or antlerless :dunno:. They may just fill the freezer, you never know.

They have eastside tags and put in for permits, so they wont be able to hunt for elk. They have never hunted on the westside, so this will be a foreign experience for them. :chuckle:

There are some good ones, how old is his son?
Might show him one of our neighborhood deer...

I think he is 16, but he might be 17 now. He is a really good kid that is good natured and I have hunted with him a couple of times.
