I am in the market for a truck, I don't haul much but a light weight boat. What are people's opinions on these trucks, early 2000's with around 120,000 miles on them. I am leaning this way vs. other trucks with less miles. It will be my hunting/fishing mobile, not my primary vehicle and what is a reasonable price for something in this category, thanks.

I got it, no worries. I have seen a few around in the 02-03 time frame with anywhere from 90-150,000 on them for about 10-15k, just wondered if this truck would be a better route than lets say a 05-06 Colorado with 85,000 miles for a similar price

Hard to go wrong with a Toyota. Can be difficult to find the crew cab in those years for a decent price though. Get the TRD off road with the rear locker if possible. The used market is tough with Toyota pickups, most are asking above blue book and won't budge on price because they know it will sell if its any kind of decent shape and has been cared for.

I know its not an early 2000's but I bought a 97 tacoma with 180k and didn't think twice about it. It now has 245k and still rockin! 120k is nothing for a Toy :tup:

I've had a couple of Tundra's from these years and love them. Pushing 300,000 in my current one. Thing to keep in mind about this generation of Toyota trucks is that the Tacomas only get about 2 miles per gallon better fuel economy than a Tundra. Only reason I would go with a Tacoma is if you NEED the smaller space like you parallel park downtown a lot or something. I don't even have a boat at the Tundra is a no brainer to me.

I had an 02 Tacoma 2.7L before I bought my Tundra, I bought it with 80k miles, it was wrecked at 210k and in the time I had it I only replaced the starter, battery, and brakes.
Fuel milage was about 22mpg, and my Tundra is 16mpg.

My 98 3.4l had just north of 300k on it, I had to put in a radiator and water pump due to lack of maint, a couple timing belts, batteries, breaks and tires. Most stone cold dead reliable rig I've ever owned, would handle my nw jet freedom 196 around town no problem, few times I even took it down from tri cities to Oregon to fish. Needed more room so I traded it in on my 7.3, I miss the toyota.
There was an issue with rear leafs and with the undercoating not being applied properly, probably should research that some. Not deal breakers but good to know about if your going to tow.

Just wish the tundras werent so dang pricey. I've been looking trying to find an 05 or 06 double cab, they are hard to find, even harder to find one with a bench seat in front. Feel like I should just get an F150, but the Toyotas are so reliable.

i had a '98 4x4 with the 2.7 for 7 years, in that time i replaced rear wheel bearings and brakes, had the alternator rebuilt(still worked, but bearings were going south), replaced the a/c and power steering idler pulley bearings, and 1 u-joint. probably $500 in total, that's less than 100 bucks a year in maintenance if you don't count oil changes and filters. like every other stock toyota pickup i've owned, it got around 19/20 miles per gallon, but a much nicer engine than the old 22RE and just as reliable.
i currently have a 2000 with the same drivetrain, with all the options(other than the locker).
i tow my little jet sled with mine, and have towed 16' and 18' aluminum boats(lighter ones) with it. it does the job but it's not my first choice in tow rigs. my boat is around 1000lbs and that 4 banger is sort of anemic. i'm actually considering stepping up to a full size truck for towing/hauling and buying a commuter car to drive daily. wish i could trade up to an older tundra but the prices are outrageous unless you feel like buying something with 300,000 miles on it.

I just bought an 05 and it took me 6 months to find mine....they hold their value for a reason...there the best trucks out there

My '99 4Runner is really running rough at 210,000 miles...I actually need to pull the throttle body and clean the idle air control valve :'( what a heap.

I have a 1990 with 270k on it. Bought it 5 years ago with 210 on it. I have replaced the timing belt, rear end, most of the front end, and the power steering pump, and brakes as needed. I do the work myself, so my cost is parts only. Good reliable truck. I just turned it over to my 17 year old, so hopefully it will last him a few years. My 2001 Tacoma has 183k on it, I've had it for a little over a year now. Had to put a new CAT on it and a new clutch, but that's a helluva lot cheaper than making payments on a new rig. My wife has a 1997 4 Runner, 184k, we have had it for 5 years, and put new head gaskets and timing belt at about 150k. All are really reliable and have never left me stranded, so I guess I am happy! All have the V6 motors, and get between 16 and 20 mpg.

I am looking at the recall notices on my desk right now from Toyota (finally!) for the rear suspension that I fought with them for years to replace(Apparently I was crazy then but now, not so much) and the frame rust issue.
Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

I'm toyota tech for a living, went dealership route and now at a mom and pops shop. From my ties in the dealership it looks like the rear leafs have been cracking and breaking off. What makes this a recall and not a tsb is that once they break they are tending to get caught in the wheel or ground and puncture the gas tank. And they have actually seen exactly that at the dealer. This would be for 05 and up tacomas. Everyone should eventually be getting a letter in the mail for notification, followed by another letter to let you know when to come in.
1st Gen tacomas have the frame tsb, most have been inspected by now at one point in time or another. Though rare I have seen this personally when first released. These trucks were obviously from corrosive areas every nut, bolt, bracket etc would have rust on it. Usually towards the back end of the cab where the frame starts to curve upwards.

On another note..... here a few random things to consider
1st Gen tacomas (95-2004) 4wd models come with either 2.7 or 3.4l engines. If you plan to tow anything get the 3.4 5vz. The 2.7 has cheaper maintenance cost due to not having a timing belt that needs servicing, instead it is chain driven. 3.4 is belt driven and will need serviced eventually I would recommend a water pump when you do either oem toyota or Aisin (unbadged toyota).
Most electrical engine components are denso brand from factory and would recommend replacing with such. Misfire codes are usually from neglected plugs/ wrong ones or direct ignition coil failure. Can result in lean codes as well.
People like to steal the cats off tacomas and usually leads people to replace with cheap aftermarket that eventually leads to cat related codes or o2 codes. Peak under and see if a universal cat has been welded on.
There's a bit of other misc facts, mostly maintenance related but these come to mind the soonest and nothing that's a deal breaker. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me and I'm more than willing to convince someone to get a toyota lol

This is good advice for ANY vehicle. I bought a Tundra off a dude who had his cat stolen. The sillyhead went to a Chevy stealership of all places to have insurance put on a replacement cat :bash: It cost him $1,000 off his asking price in the haggling negotiation. :IBCOOL:

There are so many trim levels it's hard to keep track of them.... I believe most 4wds are sr5 with various level of trim, atleast for early ones . for example some sr5 trim levels have power options, some dont, some only have power windows/locks not mirrors. The 2nd Gen is more consistent with "standard" features according to trim level. True Prerunners will always have 2wd with the bigger motor and be slightly lifted and look like a 4wd. And there are base level 4wd models with non power options and base exterior trim so non painted bumpers, no chrome, no alloy wheels.

There's a TSB on some years for leafs. They replace the 3 pack with a 4 pack. If your year is covered it'll lift the rear slightly. Google rear leaf TSB.

Averaged 21.5 mpg on my road trip, including stop and go and city diving and 3351 miles total. Better then my 2013 Tacoma, with all the same features and options. Best tank was 23 with 20 worst. Best with the old was 21-22.

A lot of shadowless's recommendations are right on the dot, the frame inspections, I have seen two vehicles need it, one was an older model that Toyota did the buy back on, the customers were going to sell it to a friend for $1500, he got under to grease the driveline and saw rust perforations, and called me. when the Toyota rep came out they bought it back after about a month of waiting for $9400. Craziest deal for them I'd ever seen. The other one just came to my dealership two days ago, and the customer chose to replace the frame, which is a long drawn out process at a body shop and not at our shop. usually takes a couple months. I've seen a lot of rusty frames on every make of truck, and a lot of them worse than Toyota frames. Toyota still builds a superior product to most, and steps up to the plate a lot more for minor issues that can be more of nuisances than serious issues. Tacoma in general are lower cost maintenance trucks, aside of normal services, make sure and change your diff fluids every 30k, I don't care if its freeway miles or towing, just do it. the 4.0 is a awesome engine. Water pumps are common, rodents love all Toyota wires. I've seen a lot of front differential issues, there is a tsb for 08-13 that also fixes 06, 07 and 14.
All and all tacomas are a sweet truck, and you won't be disappointed.

Love my first gen Tacoma.
I own a 03 ex cab 5 speed manual, 3.4 v6, 190k. Just gas and go.
I tow a 17ft alumaweld free drifter with it. Truck handles the load fine. I don't win any races going up big hills but most the time I can hold the speed limit.
Only thing I wish I could change is...I would love to have a first gen double cab,...with a manual transmission, with 4.0 power!

i had a brand new 2010 f150 and traded it in on a 05 tundra! Like the tundra way better ! They are hard to find tho!

I've worked for Toyota since 2010, and in 06-08, In that time I have seen them take care of more customers than I ever saw at Nissan, Dodge, VW, Mitsubishi, GM, Pontiac and other dealers I have worked for. I have watched them fix customers vehicles that are so far out of warranty that I have told those customers there is no way I would pay for the repairs, and I've contacted Toyota and explained how good of customers they are and Toyota steps up and takes care of them. I have seen customers who have tried to fix their own problems, only to have to bring it to our store, and when we contact our reps, they say take care of them. Now not every case is like that, if you have neglected your vehicle, and haven't serviced it at the dealership, and at 150k miles your front diff goes out and its because you have never serviced the fluid, or other reasons, as a business model it would be silly for Toyota to take care of every customer. However, if you have serviced your vehicle at a Toyota store, if you have shown Toyota your a loyal customer to a store, more often then not they will do something for you, many times I've seen them pay for parts, while you pay the labor, or vise versa.
Toyota leaf springs go flat, they can, just like chevy, just like ford, just like dodge. I see sagging rears all the time. I also see people loading way more weight than what the payload is supposed to be, I also see people putting halfass lifts on without doing what should be done. I also see bigger, harder tires on trucks.
Sounds like your a scorn customer, maybe you have been going to the wrong dealer, or have had a bad experience and has let that tarnish you, and I will apologize as a Toyota Service guy for that.
The lack of sourcing for the springs, as with any recall, once they have figured out what the fix is going to be, making sure the supply of parts will be available is pretty important, cause if I send you a letter that says, call your dealer and set your appointment, when you call and I say I won't have parts for along time, it just stirs your frustration more as well as mine.
Also if you read the recall notice, it does state that if you feel like your vehicle is unsafe to bring it to your local dealer so they can inspect it. At that point your local dealer will contact their regional field specialist and discuss what to do if they do find an issue, and as a Toyota guy, if this is the case, please bring it to your local dealer, we have Toyota rental vehicles for a reason, and I'm sure if there is a safety issue with your vehicle, your regional rep will put you in a rental vehicle at no charge to you. This is not only for your safety, but if your vehicle is unsafe, I don't want you driving by my wife and children as well, that goes for any make or model.

I replaced my suspension in about 2012 after Toyota told me I was crazy for suggesting their vehicles have a flaw.
OME 883 front springs, OME Dakar rear springs with third leaf removed and bilstein 5100s all around WITH NO PRELOAD result in the suspension that Toyota should have spec'd in the first place.
I told Toyota that I'd already fixed their screw ups and to just pay me for parts and labor and they said I have to wait for the recall to be implemented before they can reimburse me.

I suppose since I service my own diffs and transfer case, I will take it in the bunger when that time comes.
I should post pics of my 'alloy' wheels before I replaced them. Nothing from VW Audi dodge jeep ever looked that bad.
Now I'm replacing the roof weather strip that simply blew off at freeway speeds.

Now the bracket holding my left leaf back is bent out due to weak load capacity and the stealership won't fix the bent bracket or honor the up coming recall for the rear leafs. I've tried calling corporate, they are clueless.

As T-Dozzer and I have been figuring out for the last few days, Toyota is still up in the air about what repairs are to be done with the leaf spring issue, and they are being pretty tight about repairing vehicles before the fix. What I have been told is that if a customer wants to pay for the repair, when the recall comes out with a fix, if that fix is part of the repair they did, they will be reimbursed the cost of that part of the repair. While I love working for Toyota, this sure makes it tough to keep my customer service up to my high standards. Sadly being the middle man in a lot of this crud makes me look worse than Toyota because it seems that I'm the one telling the customer to pack sand until the repairs come out. Lets hope these repairs come fast, that way we can make everyone happier(hopefully)

I appreciate your professionalism and you are in an impossible position. Toyota refuses to admit their role and is making this as difficult as possible. I got my recall notice seven months ago and without a receipt I doubt that they will even Reimburse me.
Toyota is an incredibly arrogant company and it shows

Kyle has been doing all he can and listens to my rants.......hopefully we get somewhere. If more Toyota employees were like him, this would be a simple fix.
I spoke to corporate again today and felt like I was on the receiving end of a prank phone call.
If I put an elk down in a few weeks, I'm going to have to eat it out there cuz my truck can't handle more than few hundred pounds right now.

Actually two landslides. Everything else I have ever owned grenaded it self at 120K at the most.
