-
I have hunted the 340 for over 40 years. Can't wait!!
-
Predictions? Time to fill tag? Score?
-

My goal is to beat the bull I took out of observatory last year
-
trying to beat him by 30+ inches
-
Damn those fronts are amazing! Two years in a row, your a lucky guy.
-
Yep gotta keep the luck going till Oct. 2nd
Bull tag last year and Q.bull this year
-
Nice bull, did someone post that pic for you last year?
-
yep my son
-
Great bull! Look forward to seeing/hearing about your upcoming success
-
I will have lots of pics, the story might not be so great.
Not much of a talker!
-
Pretty sure a buddy of mine is friends with your son. Great bull. I remember him from last season.
-
Beautiful bull! I love the color of the horns.
-
could be we've been around a long time
-
do you mean this guy
-
or this guy
-
Here is one from that tag last year. What a great hunt!
-
very nice
maybe we should talk
do you remember what the kill date was ?
that bull looks close to 350
-
September 24 last year. We had three big bulls that we were chasing that week. This one finally made the show. It was right around 350. Really nice tops a little short on the fronts.
-
yep my son
Thought so, when I seen your pic last year it rinsed me of Jim the anvil neidhart. :dunno: :chuckle:
-
Yeah can't wait, should be awesome , hopefully good antler growth this year
-
There are no bulls in the observatory over 240". Shhhhh :bash:
-
I know that
but a guy can dream
-
There are no big bulls there! I was in there last year after the seasons were done. Spotted a couple little rag horns hanging together, nuttin but a puny 7x8 and 8x9. On the next ridge over there was a 7x spike. Would have been legal. But no one got em....To bad they wouldn't do something to grow em bigger. Kinda reminded me of the puny elk that come out of Yellowstone each year
-
I must have missed those
-
I think the 7X spike is right up your alley! LOL! We will find a good one. For all of you guys that don't know 400, myself and a few other guys here started our hunting in that unit in the 70's. Actually my pop who got us started first hunted it in 1962. Not too may folks know the area better than 400, he will do well!
-
Great tag to have in your pocket, good luck
-
If there's a 400 class bull in there I'm sure Steve will find it, then come help me fill my peaches tag
-
Hey Lemondog, your giving away just how old we are . :bash: I've always liked those oddballs, hope I don't see that 7x1
-
:chuckle:
-
danderson you gotta start making those old spawned out bulls chew alittle easyer. Then I'll come help!! :chuckle:
-
Its easy to make those Big old spawned out bulls tender , cube steak, and burger... or a guy could shoot a little tender one.
Plus the little ones don't take up as much room on the old trophy wall, your welcome to come over to my camp, were going to
need all the help we can get
-
I plan on spending most of September at my place and get up there as much as possible. I will look you up, but I seem to have misplaced my pack board!! :dunno:
-
7x1=THERE BANG :yike: :chuckle:
-
This hunt and the cast of characters intrigues me.
Good luck.
-
Camp cook that's your job, to hold the bullets :IBCOOL:

After ALL Isn't That The Guides / PHs. Job :o

I need to purchase some trial cams, any thoughts on the best ones and easiest to use :dunno:
-
I use the Moultrie 8mp Trail cameras, Cabellas had them on sale for 90 dollars a ways back, think there going for 135.00 now, I have 6 of them !
there the best for the money in my opinion and easy to operate.
-
Thanks Dave

hey dave there's about 5 different 8mp models
-
Stop by the house when your over next time, to discuss trail cameras
-
The elk are still there, just don't have the advantage of the rut. IMO its a little harder to locate bulls.
-
Once you find them, stay on them, they wont move much unless buggered bad.
-
I drew one of the bull tags this year. Looking to improve on my one and only bull, a spike. This tag sure took a long time to draw. Good luck 400gross on your quality tag! GameHunter, hope your Dad nails a dandy!!

Likewise..
I seem to be able to figure this stuff out. My goal is to have 5 really good spots to hit before all the regular season hunters push everything around. Good luck to everyone.
-
Hot, extra dry summer will cripple scouting efforts. Already closing roads. Access will be a major issue. :bash:
-
I'm setting my camera up this weekend and usually get multiple Bulls on it. If I get decent
Ones I'll let Ya know.
-
Can't get up this weekend but was up last week still really green up high. Will try next weekend to get some set up
All info is welcome Thanks !!
-
a lack of scouting will help elk hunting

why do you say that :dunno:

coach I think we met at lemondogs party awhile back??
-
I'm not going to argue with anybody who has g*n&ds big enough to choose a handle like "400 Gross."
Very nice pictures! Continued good luck this year.
-
just dreamin besides I've bin " fixed"
-
Good luck with the scouting, the heat and the soon to be enacted fire restrictions will change all the options, get a good one.
-

My guess is he meant with the heatwave any scoutimg might cause elk undue stress in the heat and push them around when they would best be left to soak up the shade , mud and water? :dunno: my :twocents:
-
why do you say that :dunno:
a lack of scouting will help elk hunting
[/quote]my guess IS you know where the elk like .I say don't bug them let them grow and deal with the heat without stress . Guys really push elk while scouting in my mind.
If you find elk not being bothered the first week of august just back out till sept they will be there. Come the rut the big bulls move in and where they where isn't where there at. I don't see very many big trail cam bulls killed .
-
Makes sense
Come on rain !
-
Any scouting updates? Do you have big one all tied up?

I went 2 days last week (Tuesday/Wednesday). Still too hot. It was 65 degrees up top the north slopes and really windy. I spent some time with the Biologist who gave me a few pointers. I was more interested in driving the roads to learn the access routes to the areas I plan to hunt.
-
too Hot >:(
-
Any update on this hunt?
-
He passed on a pretty good bull most would have shot but there is a few monsters aound.
Pretty quite yesterday.
-
Right on...keep after them!!
-
Good Luck, get the tender one at least !
-
too Hot >:(
Meaning I would rather wait another 6 weeks for the colder weather to hit, versus trouncing around in the woods when its hot n dry. I was only looking to learn the road system that day, which was several weeks ago. I just now finally replied. Any PM pointers would be great. I am heading up next week to spend a few days looking around.
-
I had that tag a few years ago and had the hot and dry weather. It sucked!

It was warm and dry last season. We jumped 2 nice bulls in a very un-suspecting area. The key is to get out there and push canyons, glass, etc. Weather plays a role, but they are out there if you burn the boot leather and get after it. I talked to several permit holders that would drive the roads and barely set foot out of the truck. I plan to hunt my tail off this year. No telling when my father and I will get drawn for a cow and bull permit in the same season again.
-
Believe me I hiked plenty!

I figured you did. Right place right time seems to be a lot of it. Some call it luck. I wouldn't say luck, but it definitely helps to be lucky than good.
-
There are local.bulls but if weather hits it's a whole different hunt

We worked hard for this bull I passed on a7x7 and a few others early on in hopes of a true giant but couldn't turn one up. Hunted one bull for 5 of the 8 days but he out smarted me every move I'd make. But had a blast with my two boys, and we were rewarded
-
Great bull and the big grins are priceless!

I was in the Umtaneum yesterday until dark. Talked to a few Muzzy hunters. One spike killed opening day and 2 cows sometime after. Slow throughout the week with a few bull and cow sightings. Dry and 64 degrees on top of the ridge line. I saw a small herd of cows after dark on one of the roads I was driving down. Its been slow in there the last 3 seasons.
-
Muzzy season has always been the better time when I'm in there. I haven't had a chance this season to hit it due to other animal but we'll see over next week or so before the pumpkins show up.
-
Seems to be the same theme though out the units, warm and not a lot of rut activities
-
Just got home tonight. Saw many many great Bulls! And we filled two cow tags. The Bulls are screaming at sunset right now.
-
Well that sounds better
Kinda weird, I had bulls answer me in late Oct. Last year :dunno:
-
Didn't hear much out of the muzzy guys
I thought they were going to be the lucky group that hit the rut just right
-
Great opportunity, post pictures for sure!
-
I'm setting my camera up this weekend and usually get multiple Bulls on it. If I get decent
