I shot this jack rabbit a couple years ago down in Northern California with my 17HMR. Just found this pic and don't think I posted it here.
-
That is one big s.o.b. All the ones I shot growing up were half of that, or was that because I hunted them with a 30.06 :chuckle:
-
that is a monster of a rabbit
-
:yike: Reminds me of the Chernobyl rabbits we hunted over in Germany... They were HUGE! :chuckle:
-
Ccool pic, thats a monster bunny for sure, dam I wish we had em like that here.
-
mmmmmm.... rabbit.
those 17hmr are a lot of fun aren't they?
-
Put it in the Coyote Madness thread and see if anyone notices it's not a coyote. :chuckle: Might be worth a point. :yike:

I heard that they dont taste good. I never shot one when I lived in SoCal because Id heard that. THere a lot of meat on them looks like though. There was once place tehre was a lot of them in Stoddard Valley OHV area. I used to hunt birds there and thought a time or two about taking one to see what they taste like. Probably sage.

I shot a few jackrabbits in Arizona when I lived down there. There were long, but real lean, not much meat on them, but they sure could run like the wind thru the cactus. Missed more than you hit with a shotgun.
-
They were fast. THey would bust a bunch of them in the grass and spook you sometimes. I have had slings and throw rocks with them and tried aa couple times to whack them but they are too fast. By the time you wind up and sling the rock it lands where they were. Once I ran across a pit mine that was about 15 feet deep and about 20 feet wide straight down. There were a couple deer skeletons, soem other stuff, and what appeared to be a bunch of jackrabbit bones. I thought about going down to look at them but the sides were so smooth you couldnt get out without a ladder.

Hey SpokaneSlayer, nice rabbit. Kinda reminds me of them longeared greyhounds running all over at Lackland AFB. You remember them don't you?
-
those are a blast to shoot.Early 80s in southern Idaho they would round them up and play bunny baseball, even the gov was in on it.Antis to the rescue...There was a jack rabbit behind every bush.Dad loved to watch me blow them up with a 300 win mag.Good job on that one. That .17 sounds like fun

Cool pics, thanks for posting. Reminded me of when I was in the navy (1984) & would head out to the Mojave desert. We took dirt bikes , 22's, girlfriend, & lots of beer and camped for the weekend. Lots of Jacks every where, they were pretty savvy though. Hard to get a close shot. Makes me want to go through my old pics to reminisce. mike

I do remember those. As well as hearing the roaches scurry around in the dorms at night.
-
I had one of them big ass roaches fly up and hit me in the ear when we were all in formation. Like anyone would I moved my head and slapped at it, but I said Fu-- kinda loud. Well OK really loud, the TI made a bee line to me..."What is your problem airman? Do you know you are f-ing up my formation? What's all the jumpin and twitchin about? Did you just develop Tourette's, or do you always have fits?" He made me laugh :bdid: You know what came next..."Gimme a 341 *censored*!" He had a good time and made the other TI's start laughing too.
-
Ah the ole 341. We always asked new airman from tech school for a 682 and watch em freak out. Those were the days.
-
I got one of them 341's pulled for fighting in the chow line.
-
:hunt2: Daaahhhwww, I'll bite.....for those of us who have not been in.....what's a 341? :dunno:

It's a diciplinary slip. If you give more than two away they make you start basic training over from the beginning. You got "Recycled" Was a fear tactic they used in place of kicking your ass. I sure would have rather them kept the ass kickin policy, would have made being an NCO much easier at times.
