Title: Skokomish quality buck tag!
Post by: Blsum on June 17, 2015, 03:37:21 PM
So I drew the archery quality buck tag for the skokomish unit from nov 1-18th. Hoping to do this tag some justice and shoot a nice blacktail.  I know there a few members on the forum that have drawn this tag before. Its in my back yard but I havent really hunted it to much. Curious to know from other members who have drawn this tag before. What were your expectations going into this hunt and did it live up to those expectations? Would you ever put in for this tag again? What would you hold out for?

It should be a fun hunt, personally I wouldn't hold out for a wall hanger too much. There are giants in there and hunting them in the rut will help but its never easy killing a big blacktail, especially with a bow. If you get a shot at a good two point I would probably kill it, unless you're like me and have way too many of them then hold out for a solid three point. Hunt the does and you'll find bucks.

Still looking for input from people who have had this tag before. Interested in your experiences with this tag. I have a trail camera soaking right now and just acquired a ladder stand. Hoping to make the most of this tag. Thanks again to all the people who have given me pointers, info, or helped in some way already.

I had this back in 2012 when it was still 2pt or better for the tag. Was presented with a couple chance but they never offered shots I was comfortable with. And hunting solo 2.5hrs away didn't amount to much scouting. Mostly exploring opportunities for me. I drew again this year but didn't realize the schedule conflict with the dates. My sons birthday is the nov 1st so that weekendnis a no go, then the next weekend is rifle elk and it's my daughters first season hunting so that takes priority. I don't think I'll make it up and wish I woulda caught this sooner and just put in for ghost points. I had good advice from everyone on here and was not holding out for anything. Woulda took the smallest legal forky and had a grin ear to ear all the way back to Vancouver if I could. If I do make it this year it'll be maybe just one weekend and me and the wife will take the first legal bucks we come across.

A couple notes I took home..... 2pts seem to be common and come in all sizes, second week of nov was the best suggested if I recall, and there are apparently more Cougars than I thought for the area though I was not fortunate enough to encounter one, brush pickers are all over, mushroom pickers as well....and apparently there's bucks all the time behind the matlock store but all I found were does that never got trailed by a buck. And lastly I sure got a lot of looks out there for being  an Asian guy with a mohawk dressed in full  camo in the matlock store, must not be a common sight there I guess lol. Also my thread should be on here seeking help which should have some useful insight and one with the report from my experience.

My son and I had success using a pop up blind in the reprod transition areas in the evenings during rifle season last year. Find an area and sit tight they will come. There are some decent bucks there if you put in some time. There are also lots of cats in the area. I've seen 7 in the five years in that area.
