Title: Compound Bow for Deer hunting under $900?
Post by: cowboycraig on June 20, 2015, 06:53:36 PM
I haven't shot a bow for like 20 years. But was good "back in the day" and could sharpen up again. Wondering if a good bow can be had after "finished" with nice sights etc for under $900? Suggestions welcome on a build. Where would you buy and seek help with proper fit and setup?

Would like to hunt early with the quiet crew :)

You can buy used for a lot less than new retail if you don't need this year's model.

A lot of great bows from this year you could do that with too!  Almost every top manufacturer had a great $500ish bow this year.  And the last two years there were a good number of them as well.  Those two year old $500ish bows are probably only $350ish today.

PSE, Bear, Hoyt and Mission have really been doing some fantastic things in that market.  And most of the time those mid-priced bows are quieter and easier to shoot than the companies top dollar offerings.  Especially when talking PSE!  This year is the first year I can remember in almost a decade where a top of the line PSE was as good as their mid-priced bows.  And that isn't because their mid-priced bows went down in quality.

Unless you have a draw length longer than 31", i would strongly look at the Elite E35.  The lifetime warranty is transferable and the bow's shoot awesome.  Like others have said, you can find last years models all day long on archery talk.

Lots of fine bows even new in the 400-500range, add sight and your choice of goodies and you should be will under the $900tag just depends on the bells ans whistles you need.
Bowtech Carbon Knight, maybe get the RAF kit to get rolling if you want simple ready to go out of the box package.  Fast shooting light weight, reasonable draw cycle and good shooter adjustment range.  Carbon knight is a Dual cam, Diamond is the "cheap" brand for bowtech and they make the Carbon Cure which is a single cam version.  Same riser and limbs..

Then some Vital Impact Arrows from sportsmans warehouse are a great value for a quality arrow.  Made by GoldTip for Sportmans, straight and light and $37/6 with nocks, inserts and blazer vanes.  Add some razor trick heads and you are set.

I got my Carbon knight "demo" off Archery talk, was $400 shipped looked like never shot, no rubbing on strings etc even had a Dloop, peep and WB.  I think they took 10-15 shots for a article and put it back in the box.

#1 recommendation though is to go shoot the ones you are looking at.  Each person likes something different in a bow, they are a very personal fit.  Any reputable shop should be willing to do a draw length/weight set on a bow on the shelf and let you feel how they shoot for you.  Go in and spend some time, talk to them let them know what you are looking to do.

I have not ordered a bow "package" from this site but have told a few guys about it and they were satisfied with their purchase and customer service.  The company assembles the bow (attaches sight, rest, etc., tune it, and sight it in so when you receive it, it's pretty close to ready to go).  Just an option for you sir.

Not exactly close for you but I was at Sportco in Fife yesterday, they have a closeout rack with quite a few bows on it.  The Carbon knights caught my eye (yes I am biased) $549 in the RAK package which means buy arrows and a release and you are shooting.
Not going to be top tier rest, sight etc, but you are up and running and more than capable of taking any big game animal if you do your part.  That is true of any modern compound bow over 50# honestly.  They also had their share of Mathews and other high end bows in the $750 bare bow range.  I noticed an elite or two on the closeout rack, can't afford one myself so have been VERY carefull not to shoot one when offered the chance as I hear they are really really nice.

It's all been said on here.  You can get a great bow for half that and outfit it completely and buy arrows for well below your budget

I just picked up a Carbon Knight with the RAK......should be here tomorrow. I paid $599 for it. But they had the plain bow for $499.
