Hello Guys? Brand new here but thanks to whoever for setting this site up in the first place. THANK YOU!
I am looking for any and all information on the newly purchased WDFW 4-0 RANCH land just up from the Grande Rhonde river in the Mountain View GMU 172. Drew a rifle Buck tag for Oct 17-25. I have already went up there on one scouting trip last week and talked to some folks.
Any help/info would be greatly appreciated on animal quality?, roads? access points? past hunters interested in a phone conversation??? Anything.
I can offer up a thank you ahead of time and would be willing to give out all the information I have to anyone who has or knows somebody that drew an Umtanum Sheep tag as I drew the tag in 2012.
Thanks guys,
Mel

I drive through that area on my spring bear hunts, I head in from Troy Oregon up the steep grade but there are a couple different roads to take. Good roads if it is raining, when it's wet they are very muddy, no big deal though, I just wouldn't pull a trailer up there. I stay in Troy at the shilo resort, nice area, RV hook ups, showers and a store with little supplies. We saw hundreds of whitetail deer driving through each day, also saw a few mulled. Other than that , that's the info I have.

Hey everyone, Moneyshot09 (Mel), is a great dude and great friend of mine. He's also a Vancouver area firefighter and a super hero according to my son :chuckle:. I told him to join the site and try and get some info for this hunt. He's hunted all over the state and also various units in Idaho and will be a great asset to the site. So help a brother out. Thanks!

My dad has the other tag. His name is Todd. I've hunted all around the unit and am familiar with it. Feel free to call.

Thanks to all for the help and thoughts on the hunt. I really appreciate it!

The game department bought the 4-0 Ranch? When and can you access it at anytime?
-
Yes. They have bought upwards of 12,000 acres so far. Open to public.
-
Open to public for game other than deer and elk...those are draw only hunts
-
Drove from Boggans to Troy this weekend. I didn't see any bucks worth mentioning, but my sister said she saw a muley with deep forks near the main 4-0 house on the river. It was 105+ each day with a lot of bears down low.

Drew this last year… talk to the ranchers at the houses on the road before the state line, they know it in and out. PM me and I can send you some better details.
-
Thanks guys. Sorry for delayed response. Vacation gets in the way of everything. I'm sure it's going to be a fun hunt.
-
Has anyone heard if the 4-0 ranch burned? is the fire close?
-
Have not heard that it burned but it was in the path of the fire.
My son who is 13 drew one of the youth antlerless tags for 10/10/15 to 10/16/2015.
I hope we have enough moisture fall by then to be able to get in and hunt.
-
I don't think its burned yet. I've seen some big bucks on the east side of 40 ranch up Cougar Ck. I don't if that is part of the land purchased. 40 owned all the land up from the river past the hay field on the E side of the rd. and more on the west side. He had some sort of a lodge on the west side so maybe he hung on to that ground.
-
Yep grouse flats burned. 1040 hasn't tho.
-
Hi Guys. Talked with the biologist. The 1040 4-0 ranch did not burn. Hope that helps!
-
Thanks to all for the help on the hunt. Worked hard but in the end did not find a 180 class buck. Fun hunt though! Thanks again guys!
-

-
