Title: Guided trip tips
Post by: Huntin Hounds on June 29, 2015, 01:46:30 PM
My buddy and I are taking a guided trip to fish for sturgeon in late July down on the Columbia  :IBCOOL:. Neither of us have ever been on a guided anything and are not sure how much to tip our guide. How much do you guys usually tip on average and do you have any suggestions on things we should bring with us? Any general suggestions for making our trip more enjoyable? The guide supplies all the equipment so I can't really think of anything we would need except a camera and batteries.

I don't know about tip, others can help you with that.  But, what I will say is be sure to bring rain gear even if it's a blue bird sunny day.  If that wind comes up as is normal on the Columbia & you're motoring through white caps you'll get soaked.

Start at 10-15% and go from there..  Seen a lot of guides hooking fish and handing off rods, tell them to leave that up to you as your paying for a trip and setting the hook is 90% of the fun....  If it is for OS, let em coach you, but insist your on the rod, nothing like putting the initial hook up on a 10ft fish!  Enjoy the trip, one OS is great, two is fabulous, more than that totally- let someone else reel them in...   :chuckle: :chuckle:

Thanks for the ideas. I've never fished for them, but my buddy has quite a few hours bank fishing for them and has never caught one. Were definitely hoping for some over size ones, but any will do.

BABackcountryBhntr,
I bought a hound pup a while back from our guide which is how I found out he did sturgeon trips. It was pretty easy to talk my buddy into the trip as he really needs to catch one  :chuckle:. Will definitely keep you mind for future trips.
