Title: Got my Tikka stock painted!
Post by: HntnFsh on July 12, 2015, 08:36:37 PM
Been wanting a new rifle for deer and or elk for a long time. Picked up a Tikka T3 lite in 7mag awhile back.
Had some small mods to do. And additions to make to get it ready. Stuffed the stock full of wal mart bags to deaden the hollow sound. Got a Limbsaver recoil pad for it. Ordered a set of milled Talley rings that allow the scope to sit lower. Have a VX3 3.5-10 w/CDS to put in those. And over the weekend I got the stock painted. Cant wait to finish getting put together and head to the range. Will be trying out some 160 grn. Nosler accubonds in it.

Heres a few pics of the stock.

The first pic is before I added the webbing. The second is with webbing. I wanted a fairly flat finish to it. So used a matte clear on it. It was pretty shiny so I took some steel wool to it. Much better. Its not as shiny as the pic makes it look.

If you double click on the pic. it will show the end results better.
I actually really liked it without the webbing too. Not sure how I like it best. But its got the webbing now so it will stay that way for awhile.

Honestly, I'm just a tad leary of it. I wiped the stock down real well before painting. But forgot to scuff it up. So we'll see. It was pretty easy to paint. So if it does come off I will start from scratch. I used rustoleum for this one. Which is supposed to be plastic compatible. But if I do it over I will scuff it up. Use a coat of Krylon Fusion base. Then the Rustoleum. I think that will work great. It seems pretty tough though. So I may not have to.

I would of never thought to scuff it up. But then I'm not a painter. I would of thought about it after the fact too.

Looks nice, let us know how it shoots!

Did the plastic bags reduce or eliminater the hollow sound? Never thought of doing that.

I have heard of guys spraying foam into thier stocks to attempt to eliminate that hollow sound. Plastic bags seems less messy  :chuckle:
