I have a 19ft olympic and My suzuki 2 stroke kicker is getting tired. But, i need something around the same wieght. I have tried a 9.9 and an 8 and they are to heavy as my boat is a little heavy in the stern. Would the yamaha 6hp be adequate for trolling on my boat. Looking for someone with experience with one around that size. Thanks.

Prop it down and it should push your boat OK – but … you are going to stress the little single cylinder motor to an early grave. I’d go with the 8hp and find 27 lbs somewhere else to get rid of.
PS – I’ve run 2hp, 6hp and 8hp kickers on similar sized boats.

I have a T8 on my 24' Sea Sport that pushes it just fine. You should be OK.

How about instead you give me the 19ft Olympic and you purchase a smaller boat to fit the 6 HP :dunno: :chuckle:

My brother has a 6hp Yamaha on his 19' North River sled. It works fine backtrolling/trolling in the rivers and the salt.
I wouldn't want to rely on it to get you home if the main quits though.

There's a Yamaha T8 for sale on this site. Just squirt some Helium under the cover, that should lighten it up.... or light it up. :chuckle:

I have a 16' Smokercraft Tracer that I can load 4 guys in and push 5 mph with a Yamaha T4, I would think you would be fine unless you are really loaded down. The only thing I don't like is it is a bit loud when trolling mach 2 for silvers against the wind but the weight and fuel economy are hard to beat.
The other thing to consider is where the prop is, if it is below the hull it will push much harder than if the lower is too short for the boat.

My 19 foot Hewes was just fine with a 6 horse Suzuki.

The single cylinder won't run as smooth as two cylinders but they're fine for trolling. When I had my 17' Olympic I had a 75 horse E Tec, 9.9 4 stroke Evinrude, two batteries and 2 sometimes 3 6 gal. gas tanks back there! The Olympic did fine. wish I still had it.

My vote would be for the 8 hp or bigger motor. You'd find the 6 hp too small in a heavy tide and it probably would probably strain to do about 4 mph full throttle

Other option would be to pick up a 2-stroke to save the weight.

Decided to go with an 8hp Tohatsu 4 stroke. Just got done breaking it in and love it. Also it weighs in at 81 lbs, so it fit the bill. I know its not a yami or honda, but they have great reviews and the price was great.

I've got a 2 stroke 8hp Evinrude for sale with a tank. If you'd like to hook it up and do a test i'm game on 8/1.
