Found this amazing bull last night while out with the family. Pretty sure by the end of the year he will be very happy to lose the antler.....it just can't be comfortable!!
His body was absolutely huge. He dwarfed the little guy he was ganging with.

Wow. Imagine somebody finding that big shed and then spending days looking for the other side :chuckle:

Never thought about that.....but that is funny!! :chuckle: :chuckle:

He is gonna get his face smashed up this September trying to keep his females. Poor guy!
-
Is his left side a visible antler? Or am I seeing something in the background?

I see no antler

It's a little knob about the size of a tennis ball.

Hate to start a debate, but he looks like a legal spike. Not true spike.
-
I don't think so...not for me anyway. I'm not taking that chance if he has nothing more on that left side
-
I wouldn't take the chance......but if you look at the profile pic of his antlers you will see the tennis ball nodule on his left side.
-
could make a cool mount looking like half is stuck into the wall ! not sure you would use that tag on him though.

The regs are clear in stating the following:
Elk taken in these game
management units (GMUs) must have at least
one antler with no branches originating more
than four (4) inches above where the antler
attaches to the skull. An animal with a spike on
one side (1x2) is legal in spike only units. An
animal with more than one antler point more
than four inches above where the antler attaches
to the skull on both sides (2x2) is illegal.
Further,
Antler Points: To qualify as a point, an antler
point must be at least one-inch in length,
measured on the longest side.
That's a legal animal.

If it's truly a ball and I got a good look I'd dump him.

You would drop the hammer on him!
-
He probably hangs out and waits tell the bulls with both antlers get blasted and picks up the ladies for free. smart fella. probably breaks it off every year.
-
I took a bull 10 yrs ago with a decent 6 on one side the other side was a 6" nub

I would need a better angle in the field to make that decision ;)

Am I missing something in the translation of the regs? I don't see four inches of antler from the skull to make him spike legal. Or are you sure after the hide and flesh is off the skull four or more inches of growth is measured.

I don't think anything says there has to be 4 inches of antler to be a spike. Only that it can't fork over 4 inches up.
-
my guess is he is in a true spike area any way :twocents:
-
I wonder what he would look like if he had grown both antlers. Would this antler be only half as big because the growth would have to be put into 2 antlers instead of one?

Nope...... :yike: :yike: But if he stays put he will definitely live another year.
Unless of course he breaks his neck with all that weight on there.

I bet it would be just as big.....He has a HUGE body!!! I am sure this is an older bull.
