Hi, :hello:
I am new to hunting (especially elk) and hoping I would win a elk special permit application in eastern Washington I bought a eastern elk tag. But I got a big fat "not selected." :chuckle: It would be awesome if you guys and gals could give me some general areas that aren't to fare away from western Washington but on the east side. And I heard Yakama is really great for elk hunting?
Thanks!
P.S. Also any recommendations for elk hunting in Western Washigton would also be helpful to get prepared for next year!

What season are you hunting??

Follow the masses over Hwy 410 from the crest down both sides of the road for 30+ miles either way. That's where you will find the largest concentration closest to western Washington. Colockum is further north with good numbers but even more pressure. Good luck.

I'm not sure. If we still need some more meat then I will elk hunt or hunt elk next year. But probably the late season.

You can be part of the pumpkin patch :chuckle:

Yakima units.. Scouting is kinda useless, you need to find spots that pressured elk run to and hole up. Bad part is you cant do this type of scouting other than when the boom sticks start going off. But once you find these spots you can sit down and the elk will come a running!
Ive used this tactic and killed a whole bunch of spikes and cows. Finding elk right now will get you excited but most will change areas between now and hunting season.

This is solid info IMO.

For the most part you will see tons of road hunters! Get off the roads, as little as 200 yds to miles. Elk are smart, they know they are safe a couple hundred yards of the road in thick stuff.
Get into your spot early, and SIT DOWN and just wait.. The first 4 days before cow season starts is pretty good. If you do feel the need to hike a little, walk 5 feet and stop for a minute of so, cow call and repeat over and over. Spikes tend to run in to a cow call to see whats up.
On wednesday when cows are open game, sit tight all day long and wait. Patience is key! Eventually most of the time you will get elk either sneaking by you or doing 90 mph. Cow season gets them a running...
Fresh sign is a must! If all you are seeing is old sign, move to s spot with fresh sign. They have been there and chances are they will be back sooner than later.
If spot and stalking is your game, go sloooooww. Dont always look for a elk standing! Look for bedded elk, a leg, a butt, a head. It is amazing how good a elk can hide when its laying down. Im certain I walk by alot of them just like everyone else does.
Dont worry to much about noise, elk are noisy animals. Just try to keep human noise to a minimum. Clothing scratching, bullets in your pocket, squeaky boots, and so on..
When your down because of lack of elk, keep at it! Camp hunters dont kill elk.. Stay out all day everyday.
Best of luck..

You may want to reconsider your rifle option and try archery sometime? Much more peacfull and more of a hunting experience and not so much of a hearding the elk experience....... :twocents:

Josie is pretty young if memory serves. I would say muzzleloader possibly but starting archery AND hunting all at the same time is kind of overwhelming in my opinion.

there is not much of a late elk season. mike w

area 329 (north of vantage)... if snow in the mountians to push em out of the reserve above, lots of elk in the canyons heading down to the columbia... spike only area, but I've gotten one every year there was snow in the mountians... never seen a thing the other years...
