Title: The Dalles dam to john day dam fishery?
Post by: moocher97 on July 24, 2015, 12:50:01 PM: I'm going to be camping at Mary hill campground from July 31 to August 7 and was wondering how the fishery is for anything.

I camped at the Deshchutes last year and did some steelhead fishing to no avail and did some bass fishing in the john day river and lakes along the road and did really well.

Anyway my hope is to gain some knowledge and tips of anything fishing down there. Might tow our boat down there which is a 17 ft markell so salmon fishing would be cool to if there there during.

Anything is greatly appreciated!!!!

Post by: Curly on July 24, 2015, 09:16:31 PM: If I'm not mistaken, you will likely be early for the steelhead and salmon. Smallmouth and walleye may be your best bet. It's been years since I've been down there but we used to stay at Maryhill of peach beach all the time. Love the area. I never did t Ryan for catfish down there but it may be worth a try at the mouth of the John day.

Hopefully somebody with some current information will point you in the right direction.

I've caught sturgeon and steelhead below the John day dam while trolling crankbaits for walleye.

Walleye fishing definitely has quite the learning curve. A lot of times I would give up on walleye and go catch some bass since I am better at bass.

Watch out for submerged gravel bars and rocks, but right below the dam is a good spot. I think they call it preacher's eddy. That's usually productive. Also all along the north side below the lock entrance and down toward peach beach.
