Title: Going to be interresting on how the rut plays out !
Post by: BOWHUNTER45 on July 31, 2015, 10:44:47 PM
It is now about 10:30 pm ! My wife and I were headed to the house about an hour ago when we noticed about 10 cows coming out of the timber .. I pulled over and out pops a decent 6x6 still in velvet . He 1st walked up behind the herd and stood there for a few minutes then starting circling the herd ..then he bugles 2 or 3 x and singles out one particular cow and they leave the herd chasing each other ..he tries mounting her about 6 different times and is pushing her further and further away from the herd ...This is something I never seen before this early ...I am getting out my video camera and I am going to pay close attention to what happens in the next couple weeks ...things are definitely not normal ! I tried to take pictures with my phone but it was to dark ! This is the 1st branched antlered bull I seen so far this year !  I should see more and more as time goes on ..

I heard bulls bugling already too!  Last weekend I was in the mountains i have a video where you can hear them but to be honest i think they come into heat at different times anyways.  I have calves that are half grown and ones with spots on my taril cam.

I have about 6 spotted calves on one camera, as of last Sunday, too.

I think we all can relate to that bull at least once in our life we were WAY too over zealous to get to the breeding!!!!!

I don't think it's anything to abnormal I've seen same thing as early as mid June last year in Montana bull chasing Cow

2010 I saw the same thing. I had just got back to my truck after a hike and heard cows mewing, I called
Back and had a bull scream. I kept calling and he kept bugling, I worked around to where I could see him and he would bugle then attach a tree and beat up on it. Then bugle some more. I think sometimes they just get to feeling froggy

Yep, elk talk all year long but get more vocal due to necessity during the actual rut.  I've seen some mock displays also during the summer but the actual rutting behavior/vocalilization that matters for breeding purposes will occur like clockwork as the length of the day changes.  WA state has at least given us a better season for early archery this year for the first time in many years. Anxious to see how everybody fares. Hope everyone heading out in the upcoming season has been working on their elk language interpretation and calling as the elk will be more vocal for our season this year and if you can't interpret what's being said and how to react/resoond, it won't stand with you in wapiti battle. Just food for thought.
