Title: Define Raghorn
Post by: Torrent50 on August 03, 2015, 11:01:58 AM
What do you consider a raghorn bull?  Fairly new to elk hunting and hear the term a lot and was wondering what the consensus opinion is.

Raghorn to me is something bigger than a spike but smaller than a 5 or 6 point but the amount of points are subjective. I have seen "raghorn" 6's but also seen nice heavy mature 5's. For me, its the combo between mature and number of points that differentiates between raghorn and "shooter"

Any bull who has recently been fighting with a clothes line and has remnants still on its antlers.

The one pictured below is trying to take its clothing right form the source.

I've never seen a difference between those two.

Considering I normally either chase spikes in western wa or branched bulls out of state, shooters to me are spikes or mature bulls  :chuckle:

A raghorn is any branched bull regardless of the number of points that has not reached maturity yet. It could be a 6x6 that is only a 3 year old, or a 3x3 or any combination of points as long as they have not reached maturity. Most bulls that get killed are raghorns in Washington.

Raghorns don't get any love so I say let's show them some. Post up your Raghorns. This will also show some fine examples of what a raghorn looks like. Here are mine. All coastal Rosies.

:dunno: it was put down?? Where's the outrage, that poor elk was only playing with him and he was a beloved elk called "spikey"...probably another trophy hunter. ..

A bull that needs to mature, let him walk, shoot the calf

Shooting a calf isn't an option for most rifle hunters.
