FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. -- NOAA officials and whale researchers are keeping an eye on orca J39 after he was recently discovered to have a salmon lure hanging from his mouth.
The orca, a 12-year-old male in the J-pod, doesn't appear to have been obviously injured by the salmon lure, known as a flasher, which may be attached to a barbless hook, NOAA officials said.
Barbara Bender of All Aboard Sailing photographed the lure on J39 on Saturday near False Bay. NOAA will be providing money to the Center for Whale Research to keep tabs on the whale.
"We’re obviously very concerned about the lure and how it might affect J39’s feeding and behavior," Lynne Barre, protected resources branch chief in NOAA Fisheries’ Seattle office, said in a statement released to the media. "We appreciate the reports from whale watchers who first noticed this and we will work with our partners on the water to watch J39 carefully.”
While officials are hoping the flasher comes loose on its own, but are formulating a plan to help the whale if it doesn’t.

Maybe he grabbed a salmon that was hooked. Sure hope the hooks are not stainless, but are regular hooks so they will rust out faster.

If he would go catch his own fish he would not likely have that problem. The poor guy that lost $14 in a flasher and a salmon is looking at that picture telling his buddies "I told you I didn't slack the line, how many of you have hooked a 12 year old male killer whale!" Sucks for the whale, cool picture for what it is though, hope all is good.

That's my favorite color too. Good to know it catches really big ones too.
-
Thats just sad. Hope it doesn't kill the thing.

Maybe there is a salmon fly on that hook :dunno:
There was an old orca who swallowed a fly
I don't know why he swallowed a fly - perhaps he'll die!
There was an old orca who swallowed a minnow,
That wriggled and wiggled and tiggled inside him!
He swallowed the minnow to catch the fly;
I don't know why he swallowed a fly - Perhaps he'll die!
There was an old orca who swallowed a cod;
Oh my God he swallowed a cod!
He swallowed the cod to catch the minnow,
He swallowed the minnow to catch the fly;
I don't know why he swallowed a fly - Perhaps he'll die!
There was an old orca who swallowed a seal;
It takes some zeal to swallow a seal!
He swallowed the seal to catch the cod,
He swallowed the cod to catch the minnow,
He swallowed the minnow to catch the fly;
I don't know why he swallowed a fly - Perhaps he'll die!
There was an old orca who swallowed a shark;
Yes it was dark when he swallowed that shark!
He swallowed the shark to catch the seal,
He swallowed the seal to catch the cod,
He swallowed the cod to catch the minnow,
He swallowed the minnow to catch the fly;
I don't know why he swallowed a fly - Perhaps he'll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed an orca...
You didn't really think she died from eating a horse, did you?
-
That could be one smart Orca, that knows flashers attract salmon. I bet he's been nailin em'... :dunno:
-
Thats just sad. Hope it doesn't kill the thing.
I hope you're not serious, we're talking one tiny hook in one big whale.

I hope you're not serious, we're talking one tiny hook in one big whale.
We used to sell special barbed arrow heads used to tag Whale, Orca and Sealions with a crossbow.
We also make sure that all the oversize sturgeon we catch are hook free. Some big ole' boys might have a dozen hooks behind the crusher plate. Never seemed to affect their tenacity or desire to eat more shad. Orca should be effected even less!
I do think the flasher might add some short term stress to the animal. If he were weak or sick I would worry about that. But he looks mighty health to me! I expect he will break it off on a sealions head in no time at all :tup:

Meanwhile,somewhere in wa state a fisherman is talking about a huge salmon stripping line off his reel

I expect the whale huggers will be calling for a ban on all salmon lures now.

I aint talkin'....... :chuckle:
There's actually a pretty cool youtube video of a guy fighting an orca that grabbed his salmon, the guy actually wins in the end, amazingly.
Too bad this picture was taken as I am sure it will be used by the whale nazis to try to reduce access to this area even more. :(
