I have an opportunity to purchase a hunting lease in either GMU 638,612,and 615 Are any of these areas good for elk? thanks in advance.

Are they good for elk? Yes but it takes work and patience. Having a lease would substantially reduce the amount of pressure (lot of guys hunt out there), but probably not so much if it's just a permit. Also, you need to take into account the fact that there's a lot of hunting pressure from the various local tribes in all 3 of these units. The Clearwater has some great country, but it can be steep, rugged, and for a lack of better words, overgrown. I've seen some dandy pics of some bulls coming out of there though. A buddy of mine works out at the correctional facility and sees animals all the time. I'd probably be out there under the new blackpowder regs if I could. Be aware that some people might not take the leases and permits too seriously and will continue to hunt on the lands they've been hunting for years. Love the West End, but it can be a wild place (maybe that's why I like it). Just have to respect the area, the conditions, and the people. Good luck to you.

All the units you listed have a pretty good rep for the elk produced. I would ask about what kinds of activity will be in there or adjacent out a couple miles for the time frame you would hunt or right near. Would kind of suck to go look at the area with dark timber now but in a few months see a few shovels clearing or some road building.
