Has anyone hunted dogs in the ONF ? I was up in that area visiting someone at Big House. I believe that area is called Clear Water. While up there I have seen bear and elk, never a coyote. Has anyone hunted coyote in that area and is worth the trip from Puyallup? I noticed that there are some huge clearings that looked promising.
Also I am retired military (old guy) and looking for a hunting partner for coyote.

It's mostly DNR land and would need Discover Pass. I saw three coyotes there last week, a few last fall and heard a pack yapping a couple years back that probably had five or more dogs singing.
I think the really huge clearings you probably saw were on Rayonier land on Kalaloch Ridge, would need a Rayonier permit for that.
It might be worth the drive if you have a pretty good program down.

Well Done and welcome to the site. There are lots of open areas for coyote hunting closer to you. That being said, I am going out to Clearwater this week to hunt bear and snoop for coyotes.

Thanks for the reply. Seems like there just isn't any places to hunt, even coyote without having to jump through hoops, fees, permits etc.
Regarding hunting around the Puyallup area, you either have to deal with the military or pay outrageous fees such as on Hancock managed property.
HEY....be a nice guy and let me how you do up there at Clearwater :-)

To the OP, I have run trail cameras close to there for a few years now. Gobs of elk and bear, a few bobcats and lions, but very few blacktail or coyote. Everyplace is different of course. If you can go spend 3 or 4 days there now, and bring a bear tag.

I usually chime in when I see guys asking about coyote hunting, the one place I know of that has had tons of dogs is the Yakima training center. The bio's wanted us to come back and shoot dogs after our deer hunts years ago, I imagine it's still good. Not a big deal getting on the range, you register your gun and pay a fee for the year. Take Chinook pass and you will be there in no time.

I will check that out...I hired a guide up in Latah Wa on Idaho border for a Coyote hunt this coming December. Hate to pay the price but I am determined to do some quality coyote hunting if on for a couple days.
By the way...can you provide me a phone number or address so I can contact them...I would really appreciate it.

pm me if you want to see/talk about some areas near you for coyotes.

Hey buddy, keep in mind that once you cross the hood canal, your in coyote country at any state or Pope gate.

I hunted bear in that area for many years. Killed quite a few coyotes also. Clearwater used to be real good for Elk also. There is a ton of area there to hunt, stay off the indian reservations. Stay away from the prison too.
I'll PM you a location.

Just got home from a week in Clearwater and were PD hunts. Tons of coyotes call and use the wind. Soon as you leave the town of Clearwater. Call all the roads to the prison. Get off the road tons of Indians this year, Was hard to call my bear spots. Rick

What kinda of calls are you using. That will help big time and wind and movement. Rick

If it helps OP, the dogs I saw were patrolling the roads. Sniffing the grassy edges and inspecting culverts. Trotting down one side and up the other. Lots of rabbits and grouse out there, I assume that is what they are mainly interested in now. But did see one dog about a mile from where I saw a doe and fawn. Found a few piles of grouse feathers, but that doesn't necessarily mean dog food.

Surprised I didn't run into you. The only folks I saw were one guy edging a road and then the boys from the honor camp.
