Title: Worried about my arrow spine
Post by: huntingbaldguy on August 18, 2015, 01:13:02 AM
So when my wife and i bought our bows a few months back, i bought a cheap Allen bow scale.  Long story short i found out last weekend it measure my wifes draw weight 6 lbs light (36 vs 42 lbs) when we had it tested at a shop.  It got me thinking.  I was told when i bought my Hoyt Charger that i was at 60 lbs.  I measured one day with that crap bow scale and got 55 lbs, so i adjusted it 2 turns on each limb.  Now i'm thinking i'm higher than i should be for the arrows i shoot.  They are Easton Bloodline 400 spines.  I've already snapped one (granted it hit my garage door at 50 yards).  If my bow was truly at 60 lbs before adjusting it 2 turns (i've been told up to 4 lbs per full turn), i may be more like 65-68 lbs.  I should have tested it last weekend, but for some reason didn't.  Now i feel like i need to take it somewhere and get it measured.  Aside from the one broken arrow, i'm deadly accurate to 40 yards typically.  I haven't had any weird issues, and i just bought a dozen of these things.  If i am really around 65 lbs like i think i am, how critical is it that i change arrows before the season starts, or do you think i'll be fine?

I'm no expert but if you're shooting accurately still if stick with what ya got. You'll be fine

Do your broadheads and field points shoot the same?

If they are shooting fine I would not be to worried about it. What limbs do you have? 55-65 or 60-70lbs? Not sure you could go from 55-68lbs on your bow without twisting the string.

Honestly the spine is a safety thing...just make sure you check your arrows after they hit something like a limb on the way to the target.  Any racks or clicking get rid of them.  Not worth it trust me.

I believe there's a safety curve in those spine charts . I have tested there limits many years . just make sure your legal weight wise . if they fly good leave it be . go to verify limbs however so you know what your bow is .

Weight is only one part, another issue would be how aggressive your cams are. If you were drastically underspined I would believe you'd see it when shooting. Also I believe the spine is rated at 28" carbon to carbon, if yours are shorter it will stiffen the spine.

Im not an expert by no means but I did look into it a lot this summer with my own setup.  Arrow spine is the stiffness of your arrow.  essentially when the arrow leaves the bow it is flexing back and forth the stiffer the spine the quicker it comes back to stabilize it.  The differing spines will also change your grains per inch of arrow.  This will help increase your kinetic energy when the arrow is impacting, plus make sure its not going to snap on impact.  More then poundage need to look at IBO speed of bow and draw length.

My specific issue was my target arrows shot straight but once you put broadhead on it changed the flight due to the spine not correcting fast enough and flight being off.  Mechanicals wont be effected as much as fixed broadheads.  A properly tuned bow and the arrow should hit same spot with field and broadhead or close too.

Hard to tell without knowing draw length, IBO of specific bow.  If a newer bow and say average 28-29 draw length I would speculate you could easily increase your spine to at least 340-350 range.  I shot 68lbs. at 31" draw with IBO chronoed at 265.  I shoot a 300 spine with deep six inserts and muzzy trocar broadheads.  I increased my spine in last year with increased draw poundage and new string on bow and immediately saw improvement in shooting and grouping with broadheads.

Hope it helps a little pretty rough info hopefully I had it all correct but If I don't some pretty smart bow guys on here im sure someone will correct.

It's a Hoyt charger, honestly not sure on the limbs. I thought it was only 50 to 60 and 60 to 70 available but now see there's a 55 to 65. My draw length is 27", ibo speed is 325.

Next part I'm going to catch hell for. I've not shot with broad heads yet. I literally just got them in the mail yesterday. I plan to shoot with them this week, possibly tomorrow. I have 2 different ones, Strickland helix and magnus black hornets, both in 125 grain.

I believe on 60lb hoyt hunting bows one turn is about 2.5 lbs.
