So me and a good buddy of mine plan on heading to idaho this year for the first time and we plan to hunt unit 10a and probably the surrounding other few units that are open that time of year. I'm just kind of curious what to expect that time of year weather wise and how the rut activity is down there that time of year. I am also kind of wondering how the success rates are down there that time of year. We are both experienced hunters for a number of years but just have never dipped into idaho. any info is greatly appreciated! mike

Lot of fire in 10a right now...should be out by thanksgiving! Some private land in the area, look towards dworshak reservoir, tons of whitetail...if you aren't too picky and you are experienced you should do alright...it's a high harvest success unit overall, but some of the success is driven by near 100% success on private land.

thanks idahohunter! were not going to be to picky beings that its our first time in the area. We just hope to fill a couple tags and have a good time! Is there very many places to pitch a wall tent and all that?

Weather can be anywhere from 50's to -10! Be prepared for both. Lots of good areas to set up a tent. Get a Potlach permit! Deer numbers are nothing compared to what they were 15 years ago due to wolves but there are still good pockets of deer. It's a bit weird now because you have to stay ahead of the wolves. Where they were last year they won't be this year. Move around until you find good sign and stick to that area. Buy a wolf tag!!!!

Oh yeah, don't forget the rattlin antlers! :chuckle:

thanks! I'm hoping for some colder weather and maybe a little bit of snow

Yes, plenty of camping areas, firewood, etc. You will have a good time...maybe throw in a steelhead rod if you guys fish...clearwater will have plenty of fish that time of year.

I hunt 10a every year during thanksgiving week. Some years it's cold (-10 to 20) other years it's 30+ and raining. There are a lot of deer. 3nails is spot on.

thanks guys i appreciate all the great info! I'm super excited to go and experience some new area. I've read a few threads on here and it seems like some phenomenal white tails get pulled out of idaho every year

10a whitetail thanksgiving week year before last. We set up in the thick timber and let bucks run does during the day. They feel safe in the thick timber. All our shots are less then 100 yards. Sum at like 20-30. They are active all day in the thick timber. Pm me if you wanna know more about where ect..

Been hunting 10a the week before thanksgiving for about 10 years now, some years it's real cold with snow others only rain. Two years ago it was stupid warm, which lead to not much movement. Last year was the most wolf sign I'd ever seen, however, the areas with the most wolf sign is were we all took our deer. Overall, my experience is that's a great time of the year. Good luck out there.
