Title: Ken Onion work sharp sharpening tool
Post by: TVHunts on August 30, 2015, 07:52:01 PM
Got to use my new sharpener today.  Takes a little getting use to but it sure does work nice.  I sharpened 11 knives today and all but one of them is incredibly sharp. Not sure why the one didn't work as good as the others did but it's still pretty darn sharp.  Pretty happy with the purchase so far.

Thanks for this.

Think I am going to have to get one of these. They look like they should work well for the money.

I wonder if the one knife you didn't get as sharp as you like was good steel to begin with? If not maybe it was an angle thing? I am just throwing out ideas I had come to mind as i read your post....

I am not real sure.  The only one that didn't sharpen well was an old Schrade knife I've had since I was in my late teens.  I believe they called the model the "skinner" and it has a pretty odd shaped blade and was much more difficult to pull it through the system keeping proper pressure against the guide.

My wife on the other hand went nuts on how sharp her two favorite kitchen knives are now.

I think I need to pull the trigger on one of these.

I've had one for a couple of years now and I can't believe how well these work. I use the medium grit belt and then use a leather belt as a strop to get them sharp the first time in use. I've been using the fine grit and the strop since then. I don't have to change the belts all the time and using the fine also saves on the steel some. Crazy sharp knives are nice to have.

Is this the model you purchased?

I've had my eyes on it for awhile.  I use stones currently to sharpen, and it takes forever.  My only concern with the electric sharpeners is that some people say they sheer off too much metal, rather than just sharpen it.

I can't stand mine, I tried to use them for the kitchen knives and I keep rounding the point of the knife off and can't get a sharp point on the tip.  Maybe I am doing something wrong but it just doesn't work for me?

We used to pack a big sharpening wheel with us on hunting and fishing trips, what a pain.  One of the guys picked up a ken onion sharpener and it's super convenient.   No reason to not keep the fillet knifes touched up, makes cleaning many fish that much better, it's pretty convenient and easy to pack with you.   We've been catching a bunch of salmon this week and I can't be happier we have that ken onion.  Though I have bought a couple of the  attactments I've only used it to sharpen knives so far, but my buddy touched up an axe head with his said it worked alright.

Work that one knife over some more starting with the coarse and moving to medium or fine. I found on some blades the change from a straight edge to the convex the WS puts on them takes a little more time.

I've had mine about a year and a half or so and use it all the time.  Like anything else, it took me a little time to get the hang of it but now nearly every knife I've got hardly takes much more than a few passes on a steel to touch up.

I started using it on my lawnmower blades this year and it works really well.  I start with the most course belt then go to the medium course and finish with the extra fine.  That extra fine belt is almost like using a strop and not only puts a very sharp edge on it but it makes the edge very durable.  Unless I hit something with the blade, my mower blades stay VERY sharp for a really long time.

Read the instructions thoroughly and remember that cheap kitchen knife sets are made of cheap steel and often will not keep a edge very well. I used my buddy's work sharp on my buck knife and after gutting and skinning and deboning four deer it still had a good edge.

The only warning I have is if you are doing a filet knife or other knife that you want to keep very pointy, be extra careful to finish the pull with the knife going straight off the belt.  It is very easy to rotate the knife handle up at the end and flatten out your knife points.

A neighbor wanted to know how well this worked, so I picked up a filet knife that has been used in the garden and was kicking around the driveway (also had a bunch of rust on it).  I ran it through the fine belts about ten to fifteen times total, and then fileted a salmon with it like it was a brand new knife.  I think he might by one....   :chuckle:

That's the one.  Seems like Amazon was the best price and the quickest delivery.

I have sharpened several knives at Cabelas with it, but always ended up walking out with something else.

Nice! I am going to go play with one at Cabela's and see how I like it.  Might have to get one from Amazon.  Especially since others have said they can sharpen mower blades with it as well.
