Title: Elk hit on I-5
Post by: Tacbeav on September 01, 2015, 01:43:58 PM
Driving North from Olympia this morning, Coming up the hill out of Nisqually, I saw where an elk had been hit and killed along the freeway. Not a place I would have expected that to happen. I hope whoever hit it was not injured.

Hmm, was it on the Cascade Roosevelt side or the True Roosevelt side?

22 years ago a cow was hit right at the Old Nisqually road entrance ramp Northbound.  Totally destroyed that car.  Early morning.  Not sure if this same spot you refer too?

Yep, there's been a few of them who've been crunched by cars in that stretch over the years.  Not sure what the crazy galoots are doing that far down river.

There is a lot more elk in that area than people realize. I have seen a herd of about 18-20 feeding out on the flats when they still hayed it.

You could get a contour map on the GPS as well.

If you head due North you don't have to go up hill.  You will get a little moist though.

I live in the area so I will confirm that you do have to up hill both south and north bound, although the south bound hill is higher and more noticable.

Been here 21 years and never seen elk this close to town.  Just wondering what made them come down this far?

OP, you got any pics or a link to news?

Turns out it was a horse in the East bound lane.

This was pretty close to the northbound exit ramp.

Ha!  Funny in a sad sort of way.

Great story as you read from top to bottom.  I'm sure  a sharp comedian could make a good bit out of this story.
