Title: LEARN TO COUGAR CALL
Post by: bearmanric on January 15, 2009, 08:51:50 AM
I have been wanting to do this. i can take two people saturday and two sunday. meet in olympia.  i use decoy's Fawn and several different woodpecker and bird decoy's that move. and for caller i use Foxpro. i have a custom open country caller for calling big country and i have the new Fury. and i will try for coyote's to and show you how to use a Howler. and i can show you how to use openreed's and closed reed can try for bobcat's to alot in this area. even if someone is expeirenced  is cool show me something new. i like teaching people i know were to look like steve for cougar crossing's. i'll kick this around see what happen's. you must have patience. calling cat's and even coyote's is challenging. Zepp's vids are all good.

I was a little let down by the Cougar call-in, but it's still cool to see! (The little clips at the very beginning of the vid are really important to the sequence, but they aren't in it. Wierd.)

Bring a video camera when you take some HuntWA guys up, it wouldn't be hard to beat his call-in footage. Especially when WE are trying to call Cougars on PURPOSE!

Still, overall it's an excellent video, you'll really enjoy it.

What are you doing the Sunday of the Globe hunt, Rick? (Feb 15th?) Me and Knock'emDown are still looking for a Sunday hunt and a ride to the PHX airport. I'll have to see if he has anybody in mind,  but maybe we could work something out.

Go Get 'em!!!

I had a blast! Carl and Ric are both great guys. I learned alot about predetor calling, including how frustrating it could be. Even without a single sighting I had a great time and can't wait for them to come to my side and call some dogs in open country. I also offered carl the front but he declined. It did look a little uncomfortable. Let me know how you guys did today.

We had a GREAT time yesterday. Too bad about the tube steps though. That road was nothing but bad ju-ju. Snow kept us out of many of the roads that Rick wanted to try, but we still had some good sets in some very promising areas. The country is beautiful out there and I can't say enough about how hospitable and friendly Rick was. He knows his stuff and I was happy to learn everything I could.

If I get the chance to go again, I'll be happy to do all the driving (although I would have to do a lot more backing up instead of turning around on those narrow, tube step killing roads) and maybe we can get done a little earlier and I can throw in a steak dinner.

Thanks.

BTW - we did see one really good lookin coyote, but he disappeared quickly.

Came down through Copalis and saw nothing in there as well.

Good to know.
Those are the main ones I use as well. I really like DSG.
Title: Re: LEARN TO COUGAR CALL

i start my cougar stand out with Lucky bird. bring's the bird's in. then i go to goat distress. after 1/2 hour blue jay in distress. then buck fawn 1 or goat distress. maybe bobcat in heat. i think that stirred up the second cat. DSG perfect for cat's nice sound. Rick
Title: Re: LEARN TO COUGAR CALL
Post by: billythekidrock on January 27, 2009, 05:58:41 PM
Pretty similar to my sets ups for cats. Though I like to start with the jay distress to bring in the jays. then some DSG or fawn then lucky bird then bob in heat.
Sometimes I will rotate the fawn with the goat, but I really like the antelope distress too. And I will rotate lighting jack in the mix sometimes.
Then just before I leave I like to throw in some hurt pup.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "DSG"?  I have an fx-5 and I use both woodpecker, bobcat in heat, and lucky bird, but I apparently didn't buy dsg.....

Thanks!

dsg rabbit. it's named after Dillon, south and guess.  Mike Dillon president of Foxpro, Byron south and glenn guess. they got the sound while filming in texas with Glenn Guess. it's a nice high pitched cottaintail sound. best sound's are Lucky bird a very fast woodpecker sound. DSG rabbit higher pitched and lightning jack raspy sound.. these are popular Foxpro sound's. Rick
