Title: 2006 Colockum Elk
Post by: C-Money on January 15, 2009, 02:37:04 PM
I dreamed many many years of taking my first elk. Been on a number of hunts over the years where family/friends were successful on elk, but I never got one.  I tried archery, muzzel loader, and rifle. Well in 2005, a buddy at work invited me up to hunt with them out of their cabin during modern season. On the second saturday I passed on a spike due to snow/blizzard in the afternoon in the Colockum. I was worried about getting our selves out let alone trying to pack out an elk. So, I went back for 2006, and on opening morning I sat not far from where I was the year before. Around 0830 a bunch of elk came threw single file, Cows, branch bulls, and then some where in the middle a spike came trotting by. One shot form the ol 30-06 and he was down! only went about 40yrd. My dream came true! You know, there was not another hunter around me that morning! Spur_Ride had just left to find a few of the others when the elk came threw. He watched it go down from a few hundred yards away! I am proud to have killed my first elk on my own, in my home state, close to home! Thanks Pat for pointing me in the right direction. I pray for more great days in the Colockum!

I also killed by first elk in 2006, but with a bow.  I gave up rifle elk hunting for the most part, and you never forget that first one.
