Title: Wow, 2,700 pics on latest soak!
Post by: Band on September 16, 2015, 12:56:10 PM
Sounds pretty good, right?  Well, until you find out that 1 was a doe, 1 was a cow & calf, and 1 was a cougar.  The rest were daytime pics of...NOTHING!  It appears to me as though light reflections during certain parts of the day set the cam off over and over again.  Fortunately, my SD card finally got so full that it finally stopped taking pics.  Can't tell you how brutal it was to review all those pics to find the tiny amount of good ones!

Anyway, I'm careful not to set the cam up so it looks into the sun but apparently bright sun will set it off when the field of view is lit up too much even when the cam is pointed away from the sun.  Does that sound normal?  it's a Browning Strike Force, by the way.

Are you sure there wasn't any small branches or leaves blowing around in front of it?  I've done that before and filled up a card.

I've made that mistake as well so I made sure this set didn't include branches that would be waving around in the wind.  And as I say, ALL of the useless pics were during bright sunlight.

I've got well over a hundred 15 - 30 second videos before when I collected cards from multiple cams.  You can't just flash through those to see if there's something there.  You have to sit through at least 1/2 or click the scroll bar to make sure some critter wasn't just slightly out of frame when the cam activated.  Normally it is just wind in the trees that makes them go off.  Once it was numerous birds feeding on a gravel road over the course of a day or two.  What a let down after thinking that you'd got a ton of great shots only to then be punished with the reality that you need to review each garbage file one at a time before deleting them.  Thank God it wasn't 2700!

Changing the sensitivity setting will often fix that problem.

If the sun is lighting up a branch or bush and the wind moves it it will trigger the cam. I've had tons of those as well!!!!!

None of my cameras take pictures of trees or grass blowing in the wind either. I would freak out and throw them away too if they did that.

Happened to be near one of mine one day when a wasp landed on it, sure enough "snap".  Decided to watch it for a while and saw wasps set it off at least another 4-5 times.  I, too, had several hundred "nothing" pics on that card and can only guess how many were caused by those damn wasps. I've had trouble in the past with fast swooping swallows flying past the camera, never seem to catch them on camera but I've heard them click it when they went by.

Pretty easy to setup so it dosent happen    In my exp you can get way more information from 6 $50 cams than you can from 1 $300 cam.
I like to remove any branches or grass that I think may cause a trigger also looke for areas that are shady all day in your target area. Never face the cam directly south or north unless you know it's shady all day. I like ne or nw best if possible.  Also if you like to mount cams high up you could get tree sway which is only bothersome if you use video mode.  :twocents:

I had 100+ pictures of a couple of squirrels doing squirrel things on one camera last time.  I've never wanted to shoot a squirrel so bad after going thru those pictures.  lol
