Title: Barnes MZ's terrible loading!!
Post by: bankwalker on September 22, 2015, 09:44:30 AM: I bought some Barnes Mz's last night. Installed my new Williams fire sight peep and front sight. And proceed to the old swimming hole this morning to get my muzzleloader sighted in. Shot a couple hornady sst through the gun to get it shooting close. Then the bad news.....tried to load the Barnes mz and wow how tight that fit was. I could barely get it down will all my power behind it.
4 shots later and it never got better. In fact I feel it was tougher to load. :bash:

What should I do!? Can I buy new sabots that would be easy. If so which should I buy!?

Post by: JimmyHoffa on September 22, 2015, 09:48:31 AM: I find that after a few shots of anything, the muzz gets tougher and tougher. The lube burns out and the plastic and powder residue build up.
You could try putting lube on the sabot if you aren't wanting to do bore cleaning every ten or so shots.

Post by: bobcat on September 22, 2015, 09:54:54 AM: I would use a different sabot. Try the Harvester "crush rib" sabot. Or, buy the Barnes TEZ bullets. That's what I'm shooting in my Optima and they load easy.

The following has worked for my Knight Bighorn & Disc Extreme.

1. Do a JB bore paste Kroil oil treatment to the barrel. Just search this website for more detailed instructions.
2. I use Barnes Spitfire-Fire T-ez 50 cal 290 grain item 30607 & switch the sabot to the Harvester black crush rib sabot p/n H15045BR.
3. Swab barrel w/ solvent & dry patches between shots.

The bullets are much easier to load with the setup above. I shot 15 times at the range last week with no problems loading. You may also want to pick up a range rod. For hunting, I can also now load a second shot without the need of swabbing the barrel.

I need to thank Sabotloader, Bobcat & others on this site for this knowledge. I can just attest to the fact it worked for my muzzies. Good Luck!! :tup:

Absolutely. I've broken two ramrods with the TMZ's. Awesome bullets, just a bear to load.

Where do they carry these crushed ribbed sabots? Does cabelas carry them? I'm in northwest washington. Trying to avoid ordering online.
