Title: Rookie move.......... Update!
Post by: Blacklab on October 01, 2015, 07:46:05 AM
Went salmon fishing a week or so ago. Pics are in another thread. What I didn't share was my new to me boat stalled  :yike:  Thank goodness for the trolling motor and my first mate. Long paddle back against the CR current. It's a 1989 mariner/Yamaha 2 cylinder 2 stroke. Looks and ran like new till it didn't  :bash: Sounded like it was starving for fuel. Thought carb so cleaned it. Then came fuel pump, replaced diaphram $33. Being in a hurry  :bdid: I broke one of the inlet tubes on the pump. So now I ordered the whole pump $32.50 with shipping. Still have a bad taste in my mouth about that. Plugs weren't bad getting spark, a little dirty. Compression was 105/102 all is great. Went back to the plugs and bought one notch hotter. Run for a min then stall, btw it's a pull start. Then a buddy an I started talking about gas. Maybe have water or bad fuel lines. Checked that all good. The ? came up what's mix I said 50-1. Which is recommended. Then like a bolt of lightning it hit me. The batch of gas I mixed was 3 gallons but the oil was for four.  Changed out all the overly mixed fuel. Wah lah she's seems to be running just waiting for the pump. Stupid simple mistake! Note to self, pay attention with your mixes. It really helps the arm an shoulder  :chuckle:

Hope you didn't score a cylinder! But I have a feeling you may have a different issue.

Too much oil, not too little, so I'd think cylinders should be OK. be sure to have extra plugs in case of fouling with any residual oil. Also, if running off a portable tank, ensure the vent is clear. Plugged vent will allow to run for a short period, then stall out.

Thanks guys! Not worried for scorching. The air vent is open. 100% believe it was too rich. Just took longer to clear than I thought. Tomorrow will be the day of tales  :twocents:. My bad thought the worst and it was the easiest................. ;)

I'm with hntnfsh. Doesn't seem like that would have been the problem, but I hope it was and you fixed the problem. Never ran a Mariner but I bought a non oil injected 70 Yamaha in 1999, have ran double oil in it the majority of the time since I bought it and it is still running like a top. And I put 250hrs plus a year on this outboard every summer.

Does it make a farting sound when it stalls? If so, it could be your air/fuel mixture. On a Yamaha or Suzuki in the 70hp and smaller, you bottom out the screw and then turn it back out 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 and listen for it to run better or quit farting.

Good luck and let us know if you continue to have problems :=)

Thanks guys. Doesn't seem to have any issues. Stuck motor in garbage can filled with water. Instead of using mickey ears. Run's great! I did adjust the idle, it was a little high. With the oxy/gas screw 2 1/2 turns. True testing will be today. Trolling motor an fully charged battery will be tagging along as well. For that awe crap moment if needed  :chuckle:.

Your right. My bad. Still don't think that's the problem. Would just smoke some. We'll see how it does when he runs it on the boat under load. Big difference between that and running in a tank. Hope it runs great though. Would love to be wrong in this case.

Well Dana and I went to run the boat at lacamas lake. Their working on the dam and let so much water out we couldn't use either ramp. Might just live on the edge and put in on the CR. You know all or nothin  :chuckle: Here's a couple pics the wife took. That is actually 2 1/2-3ft drop at the first ramp. Were the kids are is where water should be at the second ramp. No pics of that. But you can tell there's no water.

I had a situation similar to what you described.  Everything checked out but the motor still seemed starved for fuel.  I took apart the tank and found that the pickup tube inside the tank had failed so when I was down to half tank of fuel it acted like it was actually empty since the tube broke.  Lol.  Simple fix.

By the way this was one of those orange/red 5 gallon marine metal tanks.

Start with fuel lines and connectors, fuel filter, clean out the float bowls,  fuel pump next.   All ez tasks

ALWAYS burn non ethenol gas and use stabil marine.  keep up with the extra oil thing after you figure out the issue.
