Title: Mica Peak cow moose hunt
Post by: deerhuntr4885 on October 09, 2015, 10:35:55 PM: Well BuddyK-9 and I left this morning for a short notice moose hunt. We took our time getting over here. Brought my brand new trailer and two horses. Both of us had to bring our trucks. Anyway we got camp set up and saddled up for a quick ride. Thick! We rode a couple of miles along a drainage. All off trail. We spotted one doe white tail. Nothing else but we were only out about 1.5 hours.

We are camped along the rode on Starr Rd on a small chunk of state land. Stop by and say hi if you are in the area.

Good luck on your hunt. My dad drew that tag in 2006 and he got his pretty much all the way on top. I think it was about 4 miles in from the gate.

Post by: deerhuntr4885 on October 10, 2015, 03:56:54 PM: Almost 4 PM. Nothing yet. We are sitting in a decent spot where we can see slot of country. Nothing moving. It is pretty windy up here today. I can hear someone buzzing around on a motorcycle or quad above us😡

We saw about 10 turkeys this morning and one porcupine. Hopefully soon we will see things start to move.

Post by: deerhuntr4885 on October 12, 2015, 07:20:48 PM: Well I got my moose on Saturday. We got up and saddled the horses at daylight. We headed up from the main gat at Starr Rd. We rode a spur road until it was blocked by downed trees. We tied the horses off and headed out on foot. I was pretty worried because it is really thick country and you could not see very far. We found another road and started walking until I could see some openings above us. We went back and got the horses and rode another couple miles up to an area we could see a lot of openings and roads below us. I finally started to get that feeling that this could actually happen. I told Jeff we were going to spend the rest of the day here. We tied the horses up and started glassing. Ate lunch, took a nap, glasses some more, took a nap and glasses some more.

Finally at about 5:35 Jeff said "there's your moose". I looked across the canyon and saw a big black spot that was not there before. I threw up the binos and there she was! She was feeding out of a side draw. And then another popped out behind her, this one was a bull! He was a decent bull but no trophy. She was at 460 yards. I decided to sneak closer. We set up at 281 yards and waited. Seemed like forever but it was really only about 5 minutes. Finally she stepped out and I let her have it. She ran to the left, behind some trees then nothing.....

I moved a bit and saw her wobbling. She went down and started rolling. She rolled right down onto the road. 😃 We got over and started taking pics. Then the rain came. Followed by the wind. We got her skinned and quartered (front shoulders) but decided not to pack her out on the horses. IEP Security "Wild Bill" had called and offered to open the gate for us. It was 1030 so we decided to come back in the morning. Jeff was getting sick anyway.

The next day we ran into Splitshot and his friend. They hiked A lot of miles but no joy. We gave them a ride out. It was nice to meet him.

He is the gate security manager for Inland Empire Paper and is the real deal of a gentleman and good for every word he speaks. If you have the opportunity give Bill a call at IEP and make a date for a cup of coffee.

Mike's shot was perfect. Too bad I am such a idiot with the video camera or Mike could be seeing the shot over and over. His 300 Weatherby with 180 Barnes TSX did the trick. Took out both lungs. Lots of work but worth the effort. Thanks to Mike for inviting me hunt with him.
