Title: 636 skokomish help
Post by: Natas5150 on October 10, 2015, 04:14:37 PM
Today me and the wife decided to take a little scouting trip to gmu 636. We saw that the land was owned by green diamond which led me to the green diamond web site. The web site says some areas require a permit to access the area. What I want to know is that area that I checked out today is that permit only as their web site explains or is that public land and I need not worry except for the norm like pack out your trash, do not block the gate etc. Is this area over croweded during modern season, is it a pumpkin patch? Anyone know of maps for the area? We drove to the sign that says Olympic national Forest which I know can't be hunted. I am just looking for some information about the area. Thanks for the help.

If the gates are open with a green dot, then drive in.
If they are closed with a red dot you can walk in.

Unless I'm mistaken you CAN hunt National forest. It's National Parks that are closed to hunting

I would get Olympic National Forest maps and hunt the public land. They have an office in Olympia and Quilicene where you should be able to pick up some maps.

GD has maps of their permit areas on their web site.  A lot of 636 is free access.
When asking for USFS map ask for the brown map.  I can't remember the official name.  I go through a lot of them.  I just ask for the brown map for the forest I want.

The "brown" map is probably the map that covers one Ranger District rather than the entire National Forest. I think you'll want the Hood Canal Ranger District map.

GD maps? I am not familiar with that. I have a few maps of the area sounds like I just didn't drive around enough in the area. We went across the steel bridge but then turned around. Sounds like there are a few more clear cuts up beyond the steel bridge. I may have to check that out on Saturday during the opener.  What can I expect in the way of hunters during the opener on Saturday in this unit? Will it be a pumpkin patch? Should I get up there early to stake out a spot? Is there an online web page that you all recommend I look at for the supposed "brown map"?

Thanks a lot for the help on the information on this area. We are getting excited for Saturday's opener in the skok unit.
