Title: Any kapowsin Hancock success yet?
Post by: scottfrick on October 18, 2015, 09:08:07 PM
Went both yesterday morning and this morning. Saw 2 does 1 cow elk and 2 grouse total. Had the grandpa and wife riding with me so wasn't able to beat the brush. Just wondering if any one was successful or even seen a buck.

Was there Saturday and didn't see anything. Think Deer are nocturnal from bow and blackpowder.

Have been watching trail cams for months, and activity has really slown down.

Cowboy , there is no early blackpowder in 653-654  which are the units in the Kapowsin tree farm . I believe they give 10 doe permits for 654 for blackpowder but no general early season . As for archers , we hunted it every day that we could and we did not come across another bow hunter . What we did observe was all the deer we where watching went nocturnal the second week of Oct. It was like once the elk stopped bugling the deer went nocturnal . We had been seeing bucks and does daily until then .

Wasn't blaming bow hunters  :sry: I don't blackpowder hunt so was "just guessing" (and guessing wrong).

Have crap tons of cams in Kapowsin and have been watching them for months. I enter the Buckley Gate to be area specific.

It was like a Deer and especially Elk party there for months. The lucky people who got the Kapowsin Elk tags hopefully had an easy time of it. Almost tripped over Elk's a few times in September while walking cuts. Really, not kidding :)

Kind of down about the whole thing. Have not seen Deer on the cams for 2 weeks. Of course that might just mean they are not walking close to the cams. Elk are still around as of last weekend, got plenty of them on the cams.

If anyone has any strategy on finding Deer after they go nocturnal would truly appreciate it. Will even slip ya some GPS coordinates of sweet spots after I tag out for the year  8)

The deer are still there.   They will be moving more and more towards the end of the month.  It helps when the leaves are off, and they are rutting.   If you don't mind hunting the timber, hunt old roads of reprod.   A lot of the early season takes patience.  There is a reason most people take time off during the last week of October.

Thanks I moved to a plan b location that is "off the road a ways" after going down the crappiest road my truck can do a ways. It is an old cut that is gown pretty well and isn't accessible by road anymore. There ain't no traffic there. Have my cams doing a little work for me this week there, and will start hunting again after checking cams this coming Sunday (after sitting in blind early morning). Taking Monday and Tuesday off and hitting it hard.

Dang I was hoping to hear of more buck activity. I got into my spot before daylight today and waited for it to get light, saw 13 deer by 0800, one little tiny button buck at 30 yards had a stare down with me. Then had a two point run in front of me while walking the road, of course the doe's he was with stood there and stared and he made it straight into the brush. No big boys though. I couldn't believe I didn't see another buck with any of the doe I had shots at all of them and no horns.

By rattle you mean rattle some antlers together? I have a set. Dark timer = woods right?
Sorry to be brickish.

Thanks! Will get a bag of bones. The antlers do get in the way, and have gotten my fingers with them a few times.
