Understanding the big bucks like to hide in the thick stuff, and also that clear cuts are good spots, how do you hunt a clear cut? I have been with a buddy and we "creep" the cuts when not hiking into an area, but part of me says to get into the cut, especially when you have tall weeds and grasses growing limiting what you can see. seems like they could be bedded down in there hiding. I have been gaining great tips from you guys here in my first season and am getting ready for late archery. :tup:

I have jumped deer in clear cuts as wide as only about 100 yards and surrounded by a switchback. I have been close enough to smell them (about 5 feet) before they broke from their beds. If you see sign, or not, give it a try.
Another trick is a fawn distress call from the edge to see if anything stands up to see what the ruckus is about.
ETA: Just noticed this was in the archery section. This was specifically rifle hunting, although I guess you could try it with a partner in a driven game scenario.

ive killed over half my deer in clear cuts. I spent the last two years hunting the timber around clearcuts trying to find "the big bucks." Needless to say, i didn't see any big bucks and I didn't get a deer for 2 seasons. So i said screw it and now i'm back to hunting clearcuts and i'll be happy with the consistent forkies and occasional 3pt. Hopefully, one of these days a bruiser will get sloppy and walk out :)
