Title: WY Elk with wolves
Post by: Ghost Hunter on October 21, 2015, 03:04:07 PM
2nd to last day.  Surrounded by wolves with 3 visuals.  One chased a deer by at 40 yards.  Hoping to get a bull.

Wow.  That makes the hunt interesting.  Sorry you have to deal with the added competition.  Good luck Ghost Hunter.

Wolves were howling all day all around us.  Close. :yike:   One big bull doesn't seem bothered.  Gonna see if we can pack him out tomorrow.  DIY public land general tag.

After 11 days of hunting in Wy, I've got another tag for soup.  We set up camp on the 10th in an area that had always held elk and good bulls in the past.  After 3 days of seeing no fresh sign or elk, we decided to break camp and relocate our efforts.  In the first few days we located elk with small bulls On lower ground.  Deer season started and these elk we re kept on the move.  The last 4 days we moved to a large basin in a drainage close to original camp.  That is when we encountered the wolves.  We spotted a herd with 2 small bulls and a good bull on his own at higher elevation.  Made a couple runs but couldn't close the deal.  A flat tire made us 20 minutes late for the hike that would of had us withing reasonable shooting distance.  The wolves pushed the herd out and no sign of herd or wolves on last day.  Likely they had cleared the elk from our original location.  We spotted the bull yesterday afternoon and made one final run into his living room.  We couldn't get him spotted in the aspens before he busted us.  One last 3 mile walk to the truck in the dark and season over.  Looking back the day before with a wolf in the crosshairs at 40 yards, what would you do?

Honestly, a lot of guys would easily say they would have killed the wolf, including myself.  I'm guessing you didn't have a wolf tag, I'm not sure the laws in Wyoming.  But, if that was in Idaho it would have been a dead wolf.  If there are no wolf tags in Wyoming and the heat could come down on you big time, it would be a hard decision.     SSS

There was no season or license needed in Wy.  They classify them as predators same as a coyote, jack rabbit, etc.  However a judge overruled as has them back on protected status.  Didn't want to be talking to a federal officer.  Brother talked to G&F while checking a bear we found in a tree above our head.  :yike: They are getting lots of wolf reports from hunters.
