My dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer about 3 years ago and it's dwindled him down to a fraction of his former self. After numerous radiation therapy and new treatments it's really starting to take a toll on him and he's been having more bad days than good. So about three months ago I found out that the department of fish and game have a tag for people that are terminally ill and within six months of hospice. So sure enough my dad made a few phone calls and they gave him a any elk tag and he has until the end of November to fill it. He's going to the colockum tomorrow and my son and I will be joining him on Friday. I don't know who's more excited my dad or me , my dad hasn't ever shot an elk, not from lack of trying, so this will probably be his first and last elk so I'm hoping for a bruiser but I know my dad would be happy with a cow. I will keep you guys posted.

You are making your Dad proud of you. That is a gift that is not always easy. Good job. It is also great witnessing/mentoring to younger eyes that are watching. That's being a man.

treekillersteve,
Sorry to hear about your dad.
You were all successful as soon as you and your son joined him.
My dad never did kill an elk......didn't matter. Sitting around the fire is what really matters.

Losing loved ones is tough, as we all get older it becomes more and more a reality. The memories are what keeps us smiling. That Bull will be one heck of a good memory.

It's very nice to see some good come out of a state program. Keeping your dad and family in my thoughts, hope you get to enjoy several elk meals with dad in the coming weeks.
-
What a wonderful thing for you two to be able to share together. I'm sorry about your dad's illness. I'm glad you're making the most of your time together.
-
I am sure that is a hunt you will cherish forever, congratulations!
I am glad the state does this for people in these situations. My cousin got a deer tag for similar reasons, they even let him hunt early since he started chemo on opening day of rifle. It's very bittersweet, I don't think anyone wants to qualify for them, but they will really work with you to make sure you get out in the woods.
-
That's very cool, so sorry to hear about your dad though. Awesome story and thanks for sharing with us.
-
