Title: Looking for gunsmith to replace trigger.
Post by: hogslayer on October 26, 2015, 08:31:36 PM
I have an older Ruger Mark I I m77 270.  I HATE the factory trigger and want to get it replaced with something in the 4lb range.  The stock trigger has a lot of creep and travel and seems to be about 7lbs.  I am also interested in getting a new stock out on it.  Does anyone have some recommendations on the west side?

You can get a Timney trigger and do it yourself in under an hour for $125. They even include the instructions with it.  It's not hard to do.

Is this the tang safety version? You could just have the trigger polished and adjusted and it would be fine. I had a 257 R done and it was nice, think it was $25 at the time.

I just put a Timney in my tang safety M77 .243. The tang takes some time with the carving on the stock.
It is very smooth now.

I looked up the instructions for the trigger.  It seems like something I would screw up somehow.  I have had bad luck on stuff like that.

I have few skills other than simple breaking down and lubing. I put a new trigger in my AR and removed and replaced the trigger assembly in my Ruger LC9, both by using YouTube videos as a guide and starting and stopping where I needed to. You can find almost everything DIY on there and do it yourself.

Agree, pretty much anything short of surgery.  Trigger jobs, bedding jobs and working on the 7.3! All from you tube.

I forgot the nightmare of taking the trigger assembly apart in my 10/22. Also fixed with YouTube. I have no doubt that there are many surgeries on YouTube, as well.  :chuckle:

Here's one:

He is!  I spoke with him a couple weeks ago.  He does excellent work.

The ruger tang safety is a bit more complicated than the later models....expect to pay .5 - 1.0 hours of labor. They can polish up to a very crisp #4 by any competent smith.

I just put one in my model 70 and Tim it. Start to finish was less than 15 minutes. It's so easy, I don't see why anyone would pay for someone to do it.

Howa is easy to adjust. Good stuff on you tube. The howa has two screws and the thing with the howa is the safety will not work if you go too light. I've done two and they are at a little under 3 lbs. and crisp. You can do it. Half hour job tops.

Was just looking at that. Thanks.
Have you done anything else to yours? Thinking different stock and removable mag.

Sorry for thread jack.
