I was out by Seabeck walking down an gated logging road and I saw 2 styrofoam plates with wood BBQ skewers holding the plate to the ground. Said WDFW and a couple numbers and under it was a plastic cup buried in the ground so the top of the cup is level with the ground and filled half way with a clear yellowish fluid. What is it? Didn't smell nasty.

Bug catcher?
-
They had gypsy moth traps a few years ago. :dunno:
-
The plates were staked down to the ground with the skewers I don't know how anything but ants and gnats could get in there.
-
Trail camera nearby?
-
Wolf urine!
-
Sounds like they're trying to take an insect sample too me...
-
Drug test for poachers.

Yes. It sounds like a pit fall insect trap
-
No doubt they are some sort of trap to catch the the dirty chemicals the airplanes are spraying on us so that they can be used in vaccinations. :dunno:

What does wdfw have to do with bugs? Seems like a DNR, county or state issue.
-
General baseline data should include bugs

Everything is connected in regards to the food chain/habitat for wildlife... Yes, even insects.

Something I's never seen before, thought I's share.
-
They are donation cups!

So there was a plate staked down with WDFW info on it an you pulled it up to see what was under it?
Strikes me as strange that a guy would tamper with something like that.

Really? I'd look as well, of course replacing it how it was when I was done.

I just read about WDFW doing shoreline studies of forage fish. ArticLe mentioned how tiny the eggs were and i thought this might be related? :dunno:

WDFW Snipe trap :chuckle:
-
Did you provide a sample? :chuckle:
-
Sounds like a slug trap.
Hoof rot studies?
-
was the cup half full,or half empty????

WDFW Snipe trap :chuckle:
You are aware that snipe is actually a upland bird that does exist right?
-
No cell phone pic?
-
That's weird. have you contacted them about it? I live out in seabeck but all that I hunt is private so I've never seen anything like it. Any pics?

Where did he say he messed with it. You, my fellow member, are a strange fellow.

I'll admit I'm "assuming" a bit, but I cant figure how given the info provided by the OP on the setup, that he managed to smell and see the liquid without first pulling up the plate to see what was under it.
So in my estimation the OP "said he messed with it" in his 2 posts.

You may well be correct, that I am a strange fellow. I tend to leave things alone that aren't mine and appear to be purposefully placed where they are. That's why I leave trail cameras alone, don't touch climbing tree stands left at the base of tree's, leave research project materials alone, ect...... But based on experience and "Someone stole my stand/trail camera" threads, I'd say my behavior is abnormal on average. I can live with that.

WDFW Snipe trap :chuckle:
We have a burlap sack and

Ya, but all the old timers know you can really only catch them after midnight with a burlap sack while making their mating call and beating two sticks together.

In my teen years, every time we saw plastic cups in the woods, when followed led straight to a keg of foamy beer.
They are used to find your way out of the woods after the party, closing one eye helps to figure out which of the two (right or left) to follow.
