For the first time in a number of years, I was not in Montana for the rifle opener. Those who know me, know that going to Montana to hunt with my dad has always been the hunt I look forward to the most each year. That being said, I wouldn't trade the weekend I had for anything! My daughter is a first time Hunter this year but due to soccer, school, work, etc. we did not get many days to hunt. I finally got her out on a mule deer hunt and she put in over 10 miles walking with me. We saw lots of does, a couple of small bucks, and jumped one real nice four-point! Unfortunately, he came out of a pocket absolutely smoking and my daughter missed a shot at him on the run before he quickly dropped out of sight. While she would've liked to have gotten that buck, it didn't rattle her morale in the least and I was one proud dad that she put in that much effort! The second weekend of the season came, and that was the weekend I planned to head to Montana for the opener. After talking with my dad, my wife, and a good friend, I decided that the Montana season would wait this year. Instead I would be headed up north to hunt Whitetail with my friend and daughter. It would not have mattered how that hunt turned out, as it was an absolute joy to spend the day hunting with my daughter! She was able to take a beautiful whitetail Spike and the smile on both her face and mine says it all. Before it's all said and done, I may be blessed with the opportunity to take a nice buck or bull in Montana, but I can without question say that this season's highlight is already etched in stone. A big thanks to my dad and grandfather for passing on a love of the outdoors and hunting to me so that I could someday share my passion with my own children.
