I'm sure it has been asked, but is this unit permit only, or can I just find a gate and start walking?

Yeah closed now. Just looking for a new area for the 4 day late buck to bring my wife. It says its open, but a lot of places do also and are permit only.

You're good to go. No permit access for the majority of the unit. Head out towards Matlock and find an open gate. Some are open green dot, some are locked and only walk in access.

Thank you. Ill go do a little scouting now.

Matlock is like I-5 on the 800 line just FYI

Head up towards Brown creek campground.

I hunted the 636 unit during early. There are a lot of clear cuts in the area, some new and some older. However there were a lot of hunters in the area as well so keep that in mind. I bumped into a guy in Shelton the weekend of the early opener who told me he stopped hunting that area a few years back because it was becoming to over crowded. He said most of his hunting partners now pay local tree farms for keys and hunt that land instead. Never the less I will still be hunting the 636 because I don't wish to shell out 250 for keys to a gate. Sure the hunting may be better but that's a lot of money to put out. I was told Matlock was a good area to check out which is further out than the 636 not sure the unit number of Matlock but it may be worth checking out.

Matlock is on the border of 651 and 636, aswell 648 depending on your definition of matlock. 636 goes well west and north of matlock.....

I'd stay clear of the 800 line, as well as Browns creek area...
