Have a cabin in the colockum and we usually do pretty good. This year was unlike any other. We've never had people actually come down in the canyon and hunt them like they did this year. One party took three spikes in the same area bumpin them back and forth, then drove their pickup down a road that was clearly blocked. I went to the top and it looked like a highway with so many trucks, it gets crazier and crazier every year. Then a game warden came down and dispatched a buck that was shot and had a metal detector with him lookin for the round. It almost makes me not even want to hunt over there anymore.

Really did not want to read this..... Have never hunter rifle elk and have heard the horror stories but this year my wife drew a cow tag so we will give it a shot. I am truly hoping for a positive experience but have little hope as these stories are more common than not. May be the first and last year I step foot in the clockum during rifle.

I gave up hunting in the Naneum several years ago because of the zoo that it is. It does get better after opening weekend. So your cow hunt might be ok.

You should be fine Jrebel, not at many during the week for sure. Have a good time getting that cow. I've been in the Observatory this year, so did not hunt the Colockum. But I have noticed it getting worst. Places I use to hunt are filled with orange anymore. getting pretty crowded opening weekend for sure.

Got back from that hunt bethel Rd looks like a city people everywhere.Got into elk sun morning but lost them by the flume.
They are there but into the deep timber only way I could think was to get lucky and someone would push them towards me.Worked last year but none this time.So with another 200 or so cow tags gonna be alot of pressure good luck

I switched to Muzzleloader this year and to find out that the Elk were ran hard by People hunting archery on ATV, and so it was like a ghost town up there, I have hunted the pumpkin patch for 25 years and even then saw lots of elk, But when they opened it up to cows it was a $$it show, Had several friend up there that archery hunted elk and could not believe what they saw,

I remember hunting in the little Naches archery had quads all over on roads they shouldn't be on really got bad.I left Monday because I knew what was coming the cow tag holders adds more people.Believe me we hiked up and away from the roads and still ran into people where I shot my spike last year.The cow tag is a hard hunt if you ask me I ran into elk but they were on the run but I know some will succeed in getting their cow good luck up there be safe for sure :tup:

Archery was a zoo. I still dont like the quad thing. Better stay on the roads. Maybe more people cause the more west side guys hunting east so they dont have to pay to hunt all of the private timber land on the west side??

I have never rifle hunted elk, I do archery. I took my father in law up there for the rifle opener, and holy crap it sounded like a gun range. Elk running all over, tongues hanging out, puking up foam. Kinda sad.

After seeing a cow, calf and 2 pt shot by a group of hunter that were trying to hit a spike running in a herd of about 12 elk, I quit hunting colockum years ago. Made me sick.

That's what oak creek looks like for the antler shed opener. Except no gun shots.

We walked some draws away from the road but too far from the road. No one there but us. We filled our two cow tags and a spike tag. It was my friend first time elk hunting and he shot his the third day of the cow season after he wasn't comfortable with a 225 yd shot or we would have been done the second morning. A lot less people mid week.

We filled my wife's cow tag in half a day.....maybe a little lucky?? We just got off the road and away from people......man there is a lot of people.

Well a cow tag would have been easy to fill. It's the damn true spike rule. Like trying to find a needle in a haystack

We were up this weekend with my daughter for her youth cow tag. Had an opportunity on Saturday but they trotted off before she could shoot. We were in the trees so no shot when they did stop.
I was shocked at how many camps had elk hanging. Every camp had at least one and many camps had multiple elk. My guess is next year is going to be slim pickens. On the drive out on Sunday we saw one camp that was just hanging a second spike. A spike on the last day, how does that happen?
Heading back over for a day hunt on Wednesday and then back for the weekend if she doesn't get it done on Wednesday.
