Well I spent the afternoon in the workshop trying to fab out my trail cam locker, it still looks a little rough but you may see where I am going with this
In the first pic that would be the insert that holds the camera,
The second shot shows the beginning of the shell,
The last shows what it will basically looke like together.
I still need to build the rear mounts for the tree, and box in the cover, It may be built to specific cams depending on lense sensor and flash location.

The box looks good, I have thought of something similar, but my big question is how to secure it to a tree. Even with several 1/2" lag bolts, I am afraid it could be pryed(sp) off the tree with a bar. What do you think?

You gotta go big on the trees otherwise they can just cut the tree down as well. I think it has to have two levels of security. lag bolts are a great start but a visible cable lock around the hole thing makes a theif need at least two tools to steal it. So, weld some loops on each side to accept a cable lock, I like the sleeve approach, in general.
You might prove it out in plywood first to get the dimensional stuff worked out. Just a thought.

All I get are sliver from woo :'( I prefer steel, I usually get my scraps free orcheap. I was thinkin 2 las bolts and some skirting dorw the side, I can't decide to put the lock on top or botom.

Griz, I can't help you with this because if I had something like this, I would have to put my cameras on trees. At one time I was considering making something like this. If i decided to do it, it would have four pieces. The top and bottom piece would have a "V" cut to let it cradle the tree. I would weld two lengths of chain to it. You can buy a small binder at our local ranch store. I would hook the binder to the chains, and then cinch it down against the tree. Then put the padlock on the binder behind the tree. Here is another consideration. I have a cordless skill saw with a metal cutting blade, and a cordless grinder and saws all.. If i was a thief and wanted your camera, it would be gone in minutes. Locks keep honest people out. A lock is nothing but a challenge to a thief.

Can't argue with that logic - and why I try to use big trees and set up in very obscure or out of the way places. One set up produced five different bucks and was within 20 yards of a busy road.

I gues that may be my main goal, to keep them at bay for awhile. In all honesty there isn't a lock under the sun that will a thief out. I just want to make it as hard as could possibly be that way they end up tanking the cam so no body gets to use it, plus if they just decide to smash it you may end up with a candid shot of MF.

Twice, one of my cameras took a picture of a hunter that walked right ny my camera and never saw it. It is easier to hide the camera when it is not an a tree.

regarding locks. They do sell those round looking padlocks that are supposed to be more bolt cutter resistant at uhaul and storage facilities. The important thing is that the bolt of the lock is short and is almost totaly hidden by the holes it goes thru. (wow, that did not make sense)
We had a lock like this on an enclosed tool trailer and the thief could not get his bolt cutters on the bolt of the lock but did manage to cut the part off the trailer that the lock was on.
Something to thinnk about.

Well I was out in the garage this evening and decided to change my design again, now I need more material. I should be able to update tomorrow night.

One thing to keep in mind is also the weight, if it gets heavy then your more likely to not use it. Looking forward to seeing the finished project. :)

Yeah the weight thing is starting to bother me a little, I think the first will be on the heavy side just because I am using scraps I have laying around from building bumpers and winch mounts. Maybe nobody will take it simply because they won't want to lug the monster out of the woods. :chuckle:

That should work good Grizzly. Looks similar to the Moultree lock box. A bunch of you must have had your cameras stolen before to be so parinoid. I can't remember the last time I say anyone running around the woods packing a prybar and a cordless metal cutting skill saw. LOL The best place to put a camera is NOT on a main trail. Trees are the first place a thief will look for a camera.

You are absolutely right, no one walks around in the woods with bolt cutters or saws, BUT they darn sure might be packing them a week later when they return. Give some weekender a week to think and plan, and your camera is GONE.
Lets say Grizzly works cheap, and he builds me a lock box for $30 including shipping. Then I buy a case hardened bolt cutter-proof lock for $20. I still need chain and cable or lag bolts. Have you ever twisted a 3/8" lag bolt into with a ratchet. I guess you better make sure your lag bolts are not made in China. Lets say I get every thing for $60. I have six cameras now. Do I have to buy this stuff six times, that is $360. I can build three cameras for that. Have you seen the radical prybars and crowbars they make these days. Give me a week to think and plan, and I will top Nicholas Cage. Your camera will be gone in 30 seconds.
I protect my cameras with my brain, and in five years, I have never lost one.

Maybe my mind is too devious but if you upset someone with an irremovable camera, couldn't you expect some other damage? My first thought is a screwdriver through the lens of the camera and through the fresnel lens. I guess you might be able to reuse the pelican case and the battery still.

I often think the same thing, but at least the SOB doesn't get a cam. I guess I feel that if they are gonna take they can have after they screw it up.
