Dad has the rifle tag for swakane this year and we hunted the opener and a few days after that, hunted hard and only seen 2 bucks worth looking at. We have planned to head up the 16-20 to hopefully find a buck to do the tag justice, dad has waited 18 years for this tag. If anyone has any info or is willing to help it would be much appreciated

Id be hunting the very west end looking for a mover . good luck

I'm sure you know this but it is a very weather dependent hunt. My wife had the tag a few years back and the bucks did not show up until about the last three days of the season. Be patient and pray for weather.
-
Thanks guys! I know weather is the big factor but looks like we're getting decent weather already!!
-
I think what he means by weather is snow and cold, from what I've seen your not getting that.

I had this tag a couple of years ago. Like others have said, snow plays a huge factor with this hunt. I didn't see a mature buck until the last couple days of the season. Make sure you are hunting the west end of the unit and you might find a early migrator looking for doe's. I hiked into alot of places because i have a hard time road hunting, I think this may have been a mistake. If you find pockets of does, eventually a buck should show up to check on them. Maybe covering alot of ground is the key with this hunt. When I spoke with the bio, he said to cover as much ground as possible driving and checking doe's, I didn't because i don't like sitting, and prefer to get back away from the roads. It is a fun hunt, but not an easy one if you want a mature buck.

When it's wet out. Those roads suck. Be prepared for some pucker factor if it rains. I would also have chains. They help in the mud too!

There's snow (and bucks) in Chiwawa, so the bucks should be arriving in Swakane anytime. Just keep after it. I'd probably focus more up high on the west side of the unit.

Yes when I say weather I mean bad weather, AKA snow. :sry: should have been more clear.

Looks like your on your way to getting a bigun! Don't forget chains for all fours and maybe a couple spare sets!! Can't go to equipped up in that country. Show us all what you gets?????

Wow guys this is leaving me speechless the countless PM's and the info I'm getting is spectacular! I really appreciate it. My dad just had back surgery 6 months ago and is looking at another operation in the next few months so to say he is limited is a understatement.but he is like all of us and his drive and will to hunt pushes him past his limits so I am trying to keep him close to the road as possible.and we are set on finding a nice 4x4 aka dads "dream buck".thank you again for all the info guys!
-
The best piece of advice I can give to you guys is to NEVER get frustrated with not seeing any shooters early. On those late hunts each day can bring different result and they will show up. Enjoy the hunt above all because 18 years is a long wait! Good luck!
-
Great advice.
My two late hunts over that way I killed bucks the 2nd the last day.
Granted I was being picky but it only gets better minute by minute.
-
JRebel would be a good resource also. He lives in Wenatchee and looks for deer all year in those units.
-
Patience, cover as much ground as possible and glass,glass,glass....and glass

Spent all day up there yesterday, after not seeing much the day before up on burch we decided to head in from eagle creek. Seen nothing but does and a small 2 point. Then headed down nahahum canyon, and seen a few more deer up in the clear cuts around tibits mountain and that area! Headed up Sunday for the last 6 days of the season!!
-
No advice but sounds like you guys are giving it everything. Good luck and nail a brute!
-
Let it snow let it snow let it snow!!!!!!!!

Was up birch today and the bucks were getting busy chasing around!! You should be good to go

Not the biggest buck but we hunted hard up to the wire and the weather and animals just didn't want to cooperate!
