Title: Peaches vs goose
Post by: robertsjd on November 04, 2015, 01:35:09 PM
Hey guys little late in the season to be asking about areas . But for the last 4 seasons straight and the only 4 seasons I've ever elk hunted i have new. Putting in for goose and only goose quality bull archery. And this last season as you all may know the Meeks table fire did some damage in goose . Saturday evening I was rushed out of there due to that fire so I have been debating the switch to peaches ? It just so happens that the main path of where the fire took out was my spot I have been scouting / hunting the last 4 years so I'll be starting over regardless .. How long until that area has good regrowth? 2-3 years ? Many nice Bulls have been pulled out of both I know .

Elk will move back into a burn as soon as some moisture starts the regrowth process (usually pretty quickly).  I would not change units based on a fire, I might switch to your unit! :twocents:

I wouldn't worry about the fire at all. I've seen elk in burns a month after the fire. But sometimes it's good and fun to explore new country!

Goose prairie is a large unit with lots of elk. Why not relocate within goose? Either way both areas are good.

Places that burned this year, generally speaking, should be great places next year :dunno:

Jonathan S is right on this. I don't know either area but elk will be in the burns typically the next year. I would stay in your area if you already knew it was good.

I have been seeing elk in the burn area. With the seeding that is going on, it should be a good area as early as next year. The main draw didn't get all that hot.

It would be nice to see a 25000-50000 acre fire down here like up north has constantly. A burn would do miracles to the elk hunting. In the few burn scars we have down here, elk are constantly in them year round and those areas are my favorite to play around in. I was bs'ing with a few old timers this past summer who hunted this particular area before and after a burn happend. The fire cleaned up 20,000 acres over a summer. They said that the fire made the elk hunting a lot better and I believe them. 60 years in one area, and they've said the past 25 have been some of the best years elk hunting they have ever had.

Everyone knows elk only live in Peaches.

That burn area is the best in Goose and now it's ruined, you should hunt The Blues. ;)
